“Good luck,” I said, turning to leave. But before I could take a step, Dominic’s hand shot out and caught myÂ
wrist.Â
“A kiss, then,” he said. “Since you’ve decided the flower was optional.”Â
“I gave you a flower,” I said.Â
“You gave me a corpse,” he replied. “Kiss. Now.”Â
I held his gaze. The room was as silent as a morgue. I was aware of Mara standing directly behind me, and the pack elders, and Ryan, who I was fairly certain was studying the ceiling.Â
I was also aware that refusing outright was going to make a scene that I wasn’t prepared to deal with at this particular moment.Â
Suppressing a sigh, I leaned up and pressed my lips to his.Â
The kiss was supposed to be perfunctory as best. A mere peck.Â
But then Dominic’s hand came up and settled at the back of my neck, and the mate bond fiared to life for the first time in a long time, and for a moment I forgot about the dead flower and the handmaid and all of it.Â
My lips softened against his and I leaned in, just slightly, just for a second.Â
My eyes fluttered shut.Â
This was almost… pleasant.Â
But then I caught myself and pulled back.Â
I kept my face neutral. Dominic looked down at me, but I didn’t meet his gaze. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to see the look that was likely waiting for me.Â
“You can act out all you want, Ellie,” he whispered in my ear so only I could hear. “But you’re still mine, and I’m still yours. Your body won’t forget that.”Â
I wanted to say something cutting in response. But my cheeks had gone warm and my heart was fluttering traitorously behind my ribs, making it hard to speak.Â
So I said nothing. I took a small step back and looked away.Â
Dominic looked at me for another moment, then turned and walked toward the door. The warriors fell in around him. Ryan caught my eye as he passed and gave me a short nod.Â
I stood in the entry hall and watched them file out. The door swung shut behind the last of them, casting the house into quiet.Â
Through the front window, I could see Dominic cross the grounds toward the tree line where the rest of the warriors were assembled. He didn’t look back. I watched until they were all out of sight.Â
Once they were gone, I let out a small, shaky breath.Â
I hated to admit it, even to myself, but I was worried about him. I knew how the war ended in my past life. IÂ

knew he came back. But I also knew that the timeline had shifted in places, and that meant that it shouldÂ
shift in this one.Â
I looked down at my hands, and for a brief moment, I shut my eyes. I was never the religious type, but I said a quick prayer under my breath.Â
“Moon Goddess,” I whispered, “see to it that the battle is won and he comes home safe.”Â
No sooner had the words left my mouth than I heard movement behind me. Opening my eyes, I lifted my head and turned. Mara was standing at the base of the stairs, but she wasn’t alone.Â
Vivian was beside her. They were standing close enough that their shoulders touched, and they were both looking at me with twin expressions on their faces.Â
Like two serpents watching me from the water, waiting for me to be alone in the current so they could makeÂ
their move.Â
