Chapter 264

He slid into the seat across from me and picked up his menu. We each ordered coffee and burgers. Easy, cheap, and quick.

“So,” Colt said once we’d ordered. “You’re Alpha Dominic’s Luna, aren’t you?”

“How did you find out?” I asked.

“Word spreads. Took me a bit to place where I’d seen your face but I figured it out once we sat down.” He sipped his coffee.” What’s a Luna doing out here in the middle of nowhere on a random Wednesday?”

“Passing through,” I said. “Heading home, actually. Where are you headed?”

He shrugged. “Not really sure. I’ve been on the road for a few weeks.”

“Looking for something specific?”

“Work, mostly. I was with a pack up north for a few years. Warrior. I left a while back.”

“Why’d you leave?”

He pursed his lips and looked into his coffee cup. “Honestly, I’m not sure. I just felt my wolf pulling me away. I think my mate’s out there, so I guess, in a way, I’m looking for them.”

I smiled faintly. Little did he know that he was headed in the right direction. And that the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow wasn’t so much gold but rather a bucket full of shit.

“Would you be interested in work?” I asked.

He glanced at me. “Are you offering?”

“Depends on your skillset.”

“I have a broad range. Security, training, patrol coordination.” He lifted one corner of his mouth. “I’m not picky, as long as the uniform is nice.”

I laughed, and just then, our food arrived. I picked up my burger and thought about what I was about to do, then just decided to go for it.

“I might be in search of a new bodyguard,” I said.

His brows lifted. “You need a bodyguard?”

“Never know,” I replied. That part was true.

“So,” he said, “I take it you’re offering me the position?”

“You’re welcome to apply.”

“I’d need to think about it,” he said.

“Naturally. But you would be welcome to come back with me today, meet with the relevant people, look at the property. No commitment required.”

Colt smiled. “Hey, it’s not like I have anywhere else to be. Sure, I’ll head there with you.”

The drive home took just under an hour, with Colt following me in his car the whole way. I spent most of it thinking about the logistics of what I had just set in motion.

Colt showing up meant that Vivian would eventually see him, and the moment she did, the mate bond would show itself. The bond didn’t care about her ambitions, so it was going to disrupt her. And a disrupted Vivian was a Vivian who wasn’t laser- focused on making my life difficult.

It wasn’t a permanent solution, but it was a window that might just be big enough to look into my death without being interrupted every five minutes.

I pulled through the pack gate and up to the house with Colt pulling in behind me. We both got out, and I led him toward the entrance. The front door opened before we reached it.

Dominic burst out of the house and hurried down the steps smelling of thunder and lightning. His eyes went from me to Colt and back to me, then darkened dangerously. Whatever hint of worry I saw there was quickly masked by that look I had gotten to know all too well recently.

Without a word, he crossed the distance between us and stepped up beside me. The mate bond stirred as his arm encircled my waist, drawing me away from’ Colt before I could speak.

“Ellie.” He was looking at Colt. Not at me. “Who is this man?”
