Chapter 287

Ellie’s POV

My ankle felt a little better by the time the day of the organization meeting came around. Not quite enough to go about my usual routine with ease, but enough to walk a little, so long as I kept my weight off of it.

I hadn’t seen Dominic at all since the day it happened, which didn’t surprise me. Perhaps I wasn’t quite on my deathbed just yet like in my past life, but the fact that he didn’t bother to come to my bedside wasn’t terribly out of character for him.

Good. If anything, it solidified the decision I had made.

This divorce needed to happen. One way or another. And I was not going to keep dragging my feet, waiting around for things to get better.

Because they wouldn’t.

I didn’t know if Dominic would take the initiative and divorce me. I doubted it. But at the very least, this healer organization felt like an opportunity to further my career, giving myself a chance to get out of a very bad situation.

And, dammit, I was going to take that opportunity.

The morning of the meeting dawned bright and clear. I woke, wrapping my ankle in the supportive brace that Colt had picked up for me, then dressed simply. I pulled my hair back into its usual braid and headed downstairs.

Dominic was, of course, waiting for me. He was standing in front of the front door with his arms folded and that familiar

stubborn look on his face.

“You can’t go,” he said.

I stopped at the bottom of the stairs. “I can, and I will.” I said it calmly, even though that familiar feeling of frustration was

already beginning to bubble up in my chest.

His lips pursed. He nodded to my leg. “Your ankle is still hurt. You shouldn’t be walking on it. You should be resting, here. At

home. With me.”

“I’ll be the judge of that.” I walked up to him, trying my best not to limp. It didn’t work. He stayed put exactly where he was, lifting his chin so he looked down his nose at me.

“Ellie.”

“Move.”

“Why should I?” he tilted his head. “You’re just going to be disappointed by that meeting, anyway. It’s probably a sham made up by Lucas just to get you alone and out of the house.”

“You’re being ridiculous,” I said. I waved my hand. “Move.”

Dominic’s jaw ticked, but he didn’t move.

I’d had enough.

Clenching my teeth together so tightly I thought they might crack, I reached out, grabbing the doorknob behind him. I yanked the door open hard enough to slam it into his back. He gasped, stumbling, and then I was out the door before he could even choke out my name.

“Ellie!” I heard him call after me as I hurried down the steps and toward my car. “Ellie, we need to talk about this right now!”

I flung up my middle finger over my shoulder and climbed into the driver’s seat. Dominic came out of the house, running after me, but his form quickly faded in the rearview mirror.

The meeting was held in a small conference space in the neutral territory. I parked on the street, taking a moment to breathe before I got out and headed inside. The space was a little cramped but warm and welcoming with a large banner hanging over the entryway. A few people were milling around with little cups of punch and paper plates with various home-baked goods in their hands, and soft classical music was playing from a speaker.

Lucas, standing on the other side of the room talking to someone, noticed me immediately and beelined over.

“Ellie. You made it.” He gripped my arm and looked at my ankle. “Are you sure you’re okay to walk on it?”

I nodded, smiling. “Dominic thought otherwise, but I’m fine.”
