Chapter 315

Ellie’s POV

By the time I went back to my room later, Dominic was gone. I showered and crawled into bed earlier, hoping to get some rest before classes in the morning, but the truth was, I hardly slept at all that night. Mostly, I just laid in bed, staring at the ceiling, replaying Dominic’s words over and over.

One night. He said he wanted one night with me, under the full moon, doing what our bodies knew how to do the best.

I hated that, despite everything, my wolf was howling for just that. I hated that I laid there all night, right where he had kissed me before, wishing I hadn’t stopped it at all.

I hated that I was almost considering going back and telling him I’d changed my mind, even though I knew it would only end in disaster.

Because the truth was, when the sky was dark and the house was quiet, the loneliness set in. And with the taste of him still on my lips, all I could think about were the what-ifs; what if he wasn’t lying? What if I had been wrong?

What if it could be… more than what it was now?

By the time morning came, I was exhausted and angry and confused, all at once. I got dressed, skipped breakfast entirely, and drove straight to the academy without seeing Dominic at all.

I had a practical exam that morning. I barely remembered any of it. My hands moved on autopilot, going through the motions of checking vitals and administering treatments, but my mind was somewhere else entirely.

When the exam finally ended, I packed up my things and went looking for Sarah. If there was one thing I could handle today, it was finally talking to my friend. The rest could wait.

I found her in the library, sitting at one of the study tables with her textbooks spread out in front of her. She looked up when I approached, and for a moment, neither of us said anything. But she didn’t try to leave, so that was a start, I supposed.

I pulled out the chair across from her and sat down.

“Can we talk?” I asked.

Sarah set her pen down slowly and folded her hands on top of the table. “Yeah. We can talk.”

I took a breath. “Listen, Sarah, I… I’m so sorry for not telling you sooner. You deserve better than to be kept in the dark at all, let alone about something as serious as that.

She huffed wryly. “Yeah. I do deserve better.”

“I know.” I looked at my lap. “And all I can do is apologize. I wish I could take it back.”

Sarah folded her arms. “I’ve been thinking about everything you told me. And I believe you, Ellie. I really do. But I’m still hurt.”

“I know,” I said again. “And I don’t expect you to just forgive me right away. But I want to make it right.”

“How?”

“By not keeping secrets anymore,” I said. “And by letting you help me figure this out. If you still want to, that is.” I shut my eyes for a moment. “I need help. I don’t…” My voice choked up, and I paused before finishing, “I don’t want to die again, Sarah.”

She let out a small breath. “You really think someone close to you did it?”

“I don’t know,” I admitted. “But the knife came back clean when you tested it, right? And the assassin didn’t even know what wolfsbane toxin is. Which means that, unless we’re being royally bamboozled right now, the poison may have been administered after the stabbing. And the only people who had access to me after that were…”

I trailed off. Sarah nodded.

“Dominic and Vivian,” she finished for me.

“Yeah.”

Sarah leaned back in her chair and considered for a moment before she nodded once more. “Okay. I’ll help you. But can I be honest with you?”

“Always.”

“I don’t think it was Dominic,”

“You can’t be certain of that,” I replied in a low voice.

“I know I can’t,” she said, “but let’s look at the facts. He hurt you in your past life; he was cold and distant, and hardly treated you like a wife, let alone a mate. But did he ever indicate wanting to go so far as… killing you?”
