Chapter 346

I busied myself with adding a packet of sugar to my coffee, hoping she couldn’t see the way my hands were shaking. “Yeah.”

“I’m so sorry.”

“Don’t be,” I said. “It’s my fault. I should have seen it coming, but I didn’t, and now she’s dead.”

Hanna blinked, clearly not expecting that. I immediately regretted saying it at all. I was just about to apologize when Lucas strode over and put his arm around my shoulders.

“Hanna,” he said, shaking her hand. “It’s good to see you.”

“You as well.” Hanna smiled, then looked at me. “I’m actually glad you’re here, Ellie. I wanted to ask if you’re still considering taking the test.”

“The… test?” I asked, blowing on my coffee.

“We’re holding an exam process to find our first batch of traveling healers.”

“Right.” I burnt my tongue on my coffee and set the cup aside. “I, um… I don’t know if I should…”

“We could really use the numbers,” Hanna pointed out.

I laughed a little. “I haven’t even received my official healer certification.”

“That’s never stopped you before,” Lucas said. He turned to Hanna. “Ellie is a phenomenal healer. Top of her class. She could teach all of us a thing or two.”

“That’s not-”

“This could be good for you,” Lucas said.

I shot him a look, but he ignored it.

Hanna studied us for a moment. “The test for traveling healers is in two weeks. If you’re interested, you should sign up. We’d be honored to have you.”

Before I could answer, she handed me a card with her contact information on it. Lucas took it and tucked it into his pocket, grinning. I shot him another look that he once again ignored.

“Okay. I’ll think about it,” I said with a sigh.

“Please do,” Hanna said. The hope in her eyes made me feel bad for not accepting right away.

After the meeting-a few speakers gathered at a panel where questions were asked, although I hardly heard anything that was said, just focusing on breathing and not crying right then and there we left the building and walked back to the car. Lucas didn’t say anything until we were both inside.

“You should do it,” he said as he started the car.

“I’ve got a lot on my plate right now.”

“Like what?” Lucas glanced at me as he began to pull out of the parking lot. “Sitting in your room all day and crying?”

“I’m going through a divorce,” I said. “And my mother just died.”

“All the more reason to get out there and do something, don’t you think?” Lucas asked. “Besides, you could help people. Spread some good in the world.”

I looked out the window, mulling over his words as he drove us home. Spread some good in the world.

After two lifetimes of nothing but bad thing after bad thing happening, it didn’t feel like there was much good left to spread. But I decided that I didn’t need to figure it out right now. I still had two weeks. Right now, two weeks felt like an eternity.

When we got back to Lucas’s house, the mailbox flag was up. “Mind checking that for me?” Lucas asked as he parked the car. “I have to check my email.”

Nodding, I climbed out and walked over to the mailbox. I opened the lid and peeked inside to find a thick yellow envelope sitting there.

I pulled it out and froze.

It was addressed to me, and the return address was Dominic’s pack. My hands shook as I turned it over and opened

Inside were the divorce papers. Signed.

I stared at Dominic’s signature at the bottom of the page. The ink was dark and heavy, like he’d pressed down hard with the pen. But he had signed it.

It was done.

My marriage was officially over.

I stood there in the driveway, holding the papers, and waited for something to happen. For tears to come, or anger, or sadness, or relief. But I didn’t feel any of those things.

I just felt empty.
