Chapter 6
From then on, every time I ran into Alistair, Serena was always right there beside him.
The way she always looked so tense around me–I honestly found it laughable.
Word was, Alistair’s leg hadn’t improved at all.
The Sterlings brought in one medical expert after another, but none could offer an
effective treatment.
They could only recommend conservative care.
If nothing changed, he would likely be like this for the rest of his life.
Meanwhile, his brother proved himself at the company.
Over time, the shareholders began to trust him. He earned everyone’s respect.
Bit by bit, he’d secured his footing in the company.
When Alistair came up at gatherings, people usually said things like this.
“That Sterling boy–what a shame.”
“Back then, when Old Mr. Sterling talked about his grandson, you could see the pride in
his eyes. Who would’ve thought it’d come to this.”
“If the old man were still around, it would break his heart.”
Words like these, repeated often enough, inevitably found their way to Alistair.
And when you hear something enough times, there comes a point when it starts to get
to you.
There was that time, for instance—the birthday banquet for one of the circle’s big–shot.
The man had known Harold personally back in the day.
When he saw Alistair at the banquet, the man discreetly hid that flicker of pity in his
eyes.

He patted Alistair on the shoulder and smiled.
“Good to have you back.”
“You were what Harold worried about most. Now that you’re back, he can rest easy at
last.”
This scene had actually happened in my previous life as well.
It was the same elder who once told him, “You got the company back on track in no
time. You really are Harold’s grandson.”
“It’s just a pity he didn’t get to see it himself.”
At that time, Alistair had smiled lightly.
His memory still hadn’t returned, yet his tone was calm and confident.
“Even though I never got to see my grandpa one last time, I’d like to think I’ve lived up
to his expectations.”
Now, everything was a world apart.
After the banquet ended, I left and saw Alistair standing silently on the terrace.
Soft light from the venue spread around him, casting a faint glow.
He stared into the hazy night sky, lost in thought.
Of course, Alistair wasn’t the only one who heard these remarks. Serena heard them too.
She came to see me not long after that banquet.
I’d just wrapped up an important meeting when Julian informed me that someone was
here to see me.
And she’d come under Alistair’s name, no less.
I pushed open the door to the reception room and saw Serena sitting by the window, a
cup of coffee placed neatly in front of her.

Sunlight rested softly on her loose black hair.
As always, she looked so pure, so untouched–like a girl who knew nothing of the world.
I walked over and sat down across from her, looking at her calmly.
“Miss Whitmore, I don’t think we have anything to talk about.”
If not for Alistair, she and I would never have crossed paths–not in this lifetime.
And yet now, we were sitting at the same table.
Serena looked up at me and spoke as if it were the most natural, reasonable thing in the
world.
“I’m here to ask you to stop seeing Alistair.”
“I heard the engagement’s over. In that case, we probably shouldn’t see each other anymore.”
My hand holding the coffee paused slightly.
I almost laughed out loud. Those words sounded awfully familiar.
In my previous life, I’d said the exact same words to her.
