“If you’re feeling insecure, we can get engaged first and push the wedding back,” Leon said. “How does that sound?”

He genuinely thought he was being generous. In his head, Natalie had already been with another man, and the fact that he was willing to take her back at all made him a saint. He had convinced himself he’d never done anything wrong, while Natalie was the one out there publicly shaming him.

Truth was, he only reached out because his company was hitting a rough patch. He figured he’d marry her first and settle the score later. Susan was right about Natalie being weak. A little attention and she’d be right back where he wanted her.

Natalie was so floored by the sheer nerve of it that she actually laughed. “Leon, you’re the one who cheated, yet you’re trying to pin this on me? Am I supposed to be grateful for your mercy? If your business wasn’t tanking, you wouldn’t even be calling me. Save the act. I’ve met some delusional people, but you’re the first one who can flip the script on your own screw-ups this flawlessly. It’s almost impressive.”

She had underestimated how low he could go. He was a complete waste of space. Every word out of his mouth just proved that leaving him was the best move she ever made.

“Natalie, don’t push me. With your reputation, who else is going to take you?”

He had lowered himself to talk to her, and she still had the nerve to throw it in his face. He was so livid he wanted to reach through the phone and throttle her.

“The mask finally slipped, huh?” Natalie lay back on her bed, her voice cold. “Leon, I was going to let us end things quietly for the sake of the years we spent together. But if I’m really that beneath you, why do you want me back? To be your doormat again? You think I’m that desperate to jump back into a disaster?”

Looking back on everything she’d done for him made her stomach turn. When Leon started his business and ran out of cash, she was the one who went to Bryan and begged for help. Bryan did it because he couldn’t stand to see her suffer, and he kept doing it every time a project hit a wall.

Eventually, Bryan saw Leon for what he was: a man whose ego far outweighed his talent. He had tried to warn her. “Natalie, he’s not who you think he is. He’s only getting by because you’re bailing him out, and it’s just making him worse. He’s not worth it. Take my advice and walk away.”

But she had been too far gone to listen. She remembered telling him to mind his own business and that Leon loved her and was only working hard to give her a better life. She had even joked that he should focus on finding his own girlfriend before their parents started hounding him.

She had really loved him back then. Now, those memories just felt like a slap in the face.

“Fine,” Leon spat. “If you want to be like this, we’ll see how it goes. You’re going to regret this, Natalie.”

“I won’t.”

Leon was the one who was going to regret it. He actually thought Susan was a good person, but Natalie remembered how she had bailed the second things got tough for him years ago. Now that he had money, she was back. A woman like that was never going to stay for the right reasons.

After she hung up, Natalie saw a message from Jackson that had come in five minutes ago. Her heart sank. She opened it with shaking hands.

It was short. “Just got off work.”

She checked the time. 10:00 PM. He was just finishing? She felt a pang of guilt for thinking he was ignoring her when he was actually just exhausted.

The fact that he replied at all made her day, she started typing a response, then deleted it, worried about sounding too thirsty. She went back and forth before finally settling on a simple “Good work!” sticker of a character giving a massage.

The second it sent, she panicked. She tried to unsend it, but in her rush, she accidentally hit delete instead.
