“Fine,” Ethan said, and he called Rosaline.
She picked up after a few rings. “Is that brat finally back?”
Ethan looked at Natalie and tried to stay calm. “Mom, Natalie is in the shower. Her phone died, that’s why she didn’t answer.”
There was a silence on the other end. “I know you two want to baby her, but a girl over twenty- five is hard to marry off. Natalie is already twenty-four. She wasted three years on that loser and trashed her reputation. Look at Nina, she’s younger and already has a great boyfriend. She…”
Natalie snatched the phone away. “Grandma,” she snapped, “The world doesn’t work like that anymore. Women don’t need to get married just to have a life. I’ll make my own choices. If you have this much free time, go read a book. So what if Nina is great? Does that mean everyone else should just stop living?”
Natalie was fuming. Getting cornered at dinner was one thing, but she wasn’t taking this in her own house. They really thought she was a pushover.
She could hear Rosaline gasping for air. “You… you’re all turning on me! How dare you talk to me like that? You aren’t afraid of being judged? Natalie, I’m telling you now! If you don’t do what I say, I’ll make sure your father loses his job.”
She hung up. Rosaline always did this. She acted like a queen who couldn’t be questioned.
If anyone disagreed, she called them disrespectful and threatened Ethan’s career. She had been using that same threat for years.
Natalie had always stayed quiet for her parents’ sake, but she was done. This was her entire life

Marie pulled Natalie into a hug, her own eyes red. She looked at Ethan. “Natalie has been taking this for years and I didn’t say anything, but I’m done. Your mother and your sister are targeting her. They treat Nina like a queen and Natalie like trash. Now they find this piece of shit and try to force her to marry him? No way. Not happening.”
She saw the game now. Lana was trying to wreck her daughter’s life. Everything else was in the past, but trying to sell her off to a man like that was the final straw. They only used Rosaline because they knew it was the only way to make Ethan and Marie listen.
