195 Chapter 195 Underground Rescue
Marcus’s POV 1
I pushed past him and strode into the building.
Elena’s scent hit me like a punch to the gut. Strong and unmistakable.
I tracked it down the stairwell, my wolf clawing at my insides with each step deeper underground. The basement level reeked of fear and gunpowder. My heart hammered against my ribs when I spotted them at the end of the hallway.
Blackwood stood there like he owned the world, his gun pressed against Elena’s temple. Another Hunter lurked behind him, weapon ready. I shifted back to human form, every muscle in my body coiled tight.
“You okay, baby?” My voice came out rougher than I intended.
“Never been better.” Elena’s tone was steady, but I caught the slight tremor underneath.
“You picked the wrong army base to mess with.” Blackwood’s finger twitched on the trigger.
“No. You picked the wrong werewolves to screw over. And you definitely stole the wrong woman.” The words came out as a growl.
“Really? Because she’s been incredibly useful to us.” Blackwood pressed the barrel harder against her skull.
Elena let out a bitter laugh. “Useful? I’ve been on exactly two missions. One was designed to mess with Marcus’s head, and the other involved some pathetic abandoned pack.”
Blackwood’s jaw clenched as he dug the gun deeper into her skin.
“Elena. Maybe don’t antagonize the psychopath with a gun to your head.” I took a careful step forward.

“Why not? He doesn’t have the spine to pull that trigger. That’s exactly why he sends kids to do his dirty work for him.” Her voice dripped with contempt.
“Don’t test me, bitch. You’ve been nothing but a thorn in our side since you decided to play hero and save Marcus’s worthless life.” Blackwood’s knuckles went white around the weapon.
“So that’s what this is really about? You’re throwing a tantrum because I wouldn’t let you murder Marcus?” Elena’s eyes blazed with fury.
“What else would it be? We had everything lined up perfectly. Every last werewolf was going to be eliminated because of him. Then you had to waltz back in and ruin years of careful planning.” Blackwood’s mask finally slipped, revealing the hatred beneath. “Do you have any clue how long it took us to get those disgusting creatures to cooperate?”
Elena’s face went pale with shock and disgust. Her gaze found mine, wide with disbelief.
The pieces clicked together like a puzzle from hell. These bastards had been working with those monsters, using them to slaughter my people. They’d only changed tactics when Elena resurfaced, because she was their real prize. That’s when they must have betrayed the Hunters.
“Doesn’t matter now. You’ve already lost this war. Let her go.” I kept my voice level, but every instinct screamed at me to tear his throat out.
“I’m the one holding a gun to your mate’s head. I suggest you show me some respect.” Blackwood’s smile was all teeth and venom.
The distinct sound of another weapon being cocked echoed through the hallway. Cold metal pressed against the back of Blackwood’s skull.
“How about you go straight to hell instead?” Talia’s voice was deadly calm.
“About damn time, Talia.” Relief flooded Elena’s voice.
“I wanted to see how deep this rabbit hole went. Confessing to working with those creatures is pretty deep.” Talia’s grip stayed steady on her weapon.

“Talia, you’re one of my most trusted Hunters.” Panic crept into Blackwood’s
tone.
“I’ve been a werewolf a hell of a lot longer than I’ve been your soldier. Sorry, Blackwood. Drop the gun and step away from my Luna.”
Blackwood’s hand shook as he lowered his weapon. Elena immediately stepped out of his reach.
She spun around to face him, and before I could blink, her fist connected with his jaw. The satisfying crack echoed off the walls. She grabbed his shirt before he could collapse, then slammed his head against the cell bars once, twice. Blood streamed down his face as she shoved him inside and slammed the door shut.
“Where’s Briar?” Elena wiped blood from her knuckles.
“Everything went according to plan. Julian’s got her safe.” I reached for Elena, needing to touch her, to make sure she was real.
We sprinted out of that underground hell and straight into chaos. But this wasn’t ordinary warfare.
My wolves were systematically destroying the soldiers. Some bodies lay motionless, but most were just unconscious. They understood their orders perfectly. The dead ones meant my warriors had no other choice.
I mind–linked our fighters, letting them know Elena was safe. Then we ran like hell, desperate to escape this nightmare in one piece.
Explosions rocked the ground beneath our feet. Screams pierced the air from every direction. Smoke burned my lungs as we dodged debris and gunfire. But we kept moving, our warriors flanking us on both sides.
The fence appeared through the haze. Wayfinders was just beyond that barrier. We hit the forest at full speed, branches whipping past us as we disappeared into the darkness.
Behind us, the army base burned like the gates of hell. But Elena was alive,

breathing, running beside me. That was all that mattered.
We’d won this battle. Now we had to make sure we survived the war.
