324 Chapter 324 Lines Are Drawn
Marcus’s POV
I refuse to take the offered seat.
“I’ll remain standing,” I state firmly.
Several faces show brief irritation before quickly composing themselves, and
the chairman nods curtly. “Your choice.”
The heavy doors close behind me with a whispered finality.
“This conversation is being documented,” he announces.
“I expected nothing less,” I respond.
“This represents a procedural assessment,” another board member clarifies. “Not formal disciplinary action.”
“Not yet,” I correct.
The chairman’s jaw tightens slightly. “Your behavior during the recent situation has generated concerns.”
“Regarding what specifically,” I inquire.
“Command structure,” he answers. “Decision–making protocols. Professional
boundaries.”
I clasp my hands loosely before me, finding stability in my stance rather than accepting their furniture, because remaining upright keeps my posture controlled and my thoughts focused.
“Then proceed with your questions,” I say.
The chairman shifts forward marginally. “Did you actively hinder an authorized removal directive.”
“I did not,” I answer clearly.

Quiet murmurs circulate around the curved table.
“Did you disrupt established security protocols.”
“I did not,” I state again.
“Did you prioritize personal connections over organizational directives.”
“No.”
The chairman’s gaze sharpens. “Then clarify your choices.”
“I protected an individual from improper isolation under questionable authorization,” I explain steadily. “I maintained transparency, established clear jurisdictional boundaries, and imposed procedural discipline in circumstances where coercion was being disguised as safeguarding.”
Another board member cuts in. “That represents your personal assessment.”
“That represents documented reality,” I counter.
“Do you recognize,” the chairman presses, “that your public declarations intensified civil disturbance.”
“I recognize,” I respond, “that transparency expedites responsibility.”
“That was not the question posed.”
“It remains my response.”
The atmosphere in the chamber shifts perceptibly, their controlled veneer cracking as they understand I will not engage in their predetermined verbal
trap.
“You have positioned yourself as a symbol,” one member observes. “This creates instability.”
“Only within frameworks that depend on secrecy for legitimacy,” I reply.
The chairman releases a measured breath. “We are attempting to preserve institutional integrity.”

“And I am working,” I state, “to prevent it from inflicting damage while claiming benevolent intent.”
A calculated silence extends between us, heavy with implication.
“Are you willing,” the chairman inquires, “to accept supervision while
circumstances normalize.”
There lies the true objective.
Control disguised as cooperation.
“Clarify supervision,” I demand.
“Provisional restriction of independent decision–making,” he explains. “For organizational cohesion.”
“For dominance,” I translate.
“Those represent your characterizations.”
“They represent truth.”
Another member moves closer to the table edge. “Should you decline, we must evaluate more severe alternatives.”
“Meaning,” I prompt.
“Administrative leave,” he states.
“Then be direct,” I respond evenly. “Stop masquerading this as negotiation.”
The room falls completely silent, because explicit language eliminates ambiguity, and ambiguity allows institutions to survive scrutiny.
The chairman adjusts his position. “Consider this your official notification that your conduct remains under investigation.”
“Understood,” I acknowledge.
“During this investigation period,” he elaborates, “you must abstain from additional public communications.”

“Declined,” I respond.
The single word strikes with unmistakable clarity.
“You lack jurisdiction to prohibit expression,” I elaborate. “Any such attempt would validate every allegation previously voiced.”
The chairman’s features turn rigid. “You are testing dangerous boundaries.”
“I am defining them,” I answer.

The space seems to suspend breathing, and I recognize this exchange will be analyzed, scrutinized, examined frame by frame, because this marks the transition from internal discipline to explicit confrontation.
The chairman glances sideways momentarily, receiving some silent communication through his personal device, then regards me with notably
colder calculation.
“This proceeding is terminated,” he declares. “You will be informed of our conclusion imminently.”
I bow my head once, not in submission but in recognition, and move toward the exit as the locks disengage with a subdued mechanical whisper.
When I emerge into the hallway, Asher stands waiting, his focus immediately shifting to me, and I provide a single negative head shake to address his unspoken inquiry.
“They are implementing containment protocols,” I murmur.
He confirms understanding. “I sensed the shift.”
Behind us, the chamber entrance seals once more, and I understand with complete certainty that what transpired was not cautionary.
It constituted a formal challenge.
And whatever comes next will not be procedural.
