.Chapter 2-2
I snorted. “No, thank you. But I appreciate the offer.”
His gaze
shifted to my aunts. “And you? Anything I can do for you?”
“No,” Kenzi said flatly.
“We’re good, but thank you for asking, Malec,” Irene said, trying to smooth over Kenzi’s abruptness.
Mal seemed like a genuinely good guy, which made me think Kellan had kept his magical abilities a secret from his own council. I still didn’t know what his endgame was with this marriage, but I’d figure it out. And maybe, if things went completely sideways, I could try to find the reclusive king. If he wasn’t in on his son’s plans, he might be willing to help.
A few minutes later, Mal reappeared with a grim expression. “It’s time.”
He lingered for a moment, like he wanted to say or do something more, but ultimately just stood there looking conflicted.
Irene and Kenzi flanked me as we walked to the massive double doors. The sound of music drifted
from beyond them, and my stomach clenched.
“We got you, Si,” Irene whispered.
The doors opened, and I took a deep breath. With a scowl that probably wasn’t very bride-like, I
started walking down the aisle.
Every step felt like I was walking toward my own execution. My wolf kept whining in my head, telling me this was wrong, but I shushed her. I tried to fake a smile for the crowd of lycans
watching me, but it felt more like a grimace.
That’s when I saw her.
The maid from yesterday stood near the wall, staring right at me with a mocking smile on her face. Her hand rested on her belly in a way that made my blood run cold. Was she fucking pregnant?
Oh goddess, you’ve got to be kidding me.
I was completely pissed as I reached Kellan at the altar. He looked every inch the perfect prince in his ceremonial clothes, and I wished nothing but to startle him, ruin his perfect facade. When I was close enough, I leaned in and whispered, “She just couldn’t stay away, could she?”
Kellan recoiled like I’d slapped him. “What are you…” He followed my gaze to the maid. “The maid?”
“Maybe she’s hoping for a second round tonight. You’re welcome to try.” I grunted, feeling my

blood boil at the memory of her self-satisfied smirk, of his annoyed glare when I dared interrupt
him.
His face went white, then red, then a dangerous glint flickered in his eyes. “You…remember?”
A slow, terrifying smile spread across his face at my silence. He’d thought I didn’t remember. Shit. I’d mess up, big time. The annoyance I felt in my mind told me my wolf agreed with it.
“I see.” He laughed, and the sound made my skin crawl. “Sorry. I just realized how fucking hilarious
this is.”
The elder in front of us, Silas, I think his name was, had already started his ceremonial speech about love and alliances and duty, droning on about the sacred bonds of marriage. But Kellan just kept staring at me like I was some fascinating bug he wanted to dissect.
“The bonds we forge today will unite two great peoples in an alliance that will stand the test of time…” Silas continued, completely oblivious to the tension crackling between me and the groom. “Kneel.” Kellan’s whisper reached my ears along with a shiny tendril of magic directed straight to my brain like a spear. It took me a second too long to react, and by the time I was doubling my knees, it was too late. He’d seen the hesitation in my face, the way his order didn’t affect me
immediately.
He laughed out loud, interrupting the ceremony. “That’s enough, Silas. Thank you.”
The crowd murmured in confusion, but Kellan wasn’t done.
“Apologies, everyone. Seems I’ve made a fucking mistake. I thought I could lower myself and marry some mountain-born nobody for peace’s sake. But not even a ceasefire is worth bedding a conniving little bitch who doesn’t know how to follow orders.”
