Chapter 38 1

Clary

.Chapter 38-1

Simone

“Where are you taking me?” I asked, keeping my eyes closed as Kane guided me through what sounded like empty hallways.

It was already morning, and between all the chaos we needed to sort through, he’d somehow escaped for a few minutes to ask me to follow him. I’d done it without hesitation, but I was damn curious about where we were going.

“Just a few more steps, love. That’s it. We’re here,” he said, squeezing my waist gently to stop me. I heard him reach around me to open a door, the hinges creaking slightly in the quiet corridor.

“Open your eyes,” he said softly.

I opened them to see a gorgeous room bathed in golden morning sunlight. Huge windows stretched across the far wall, letting sunshine pour in and illuminate every corner. There was a bed in the middle covered with a white sheet, and several other pieces of furniture also draped in protective cloth. The space felt warm and welcoming despite being obviously unused.

“Where are we?” I asked, stepping into the room and turning in a slow circle.

The light entering through the windows made everything look cozy and peaceful, exactly the kind of space you’d want to spend quiet mornings in. It was bigger than my bedroom back home, with high ceilings and beautiful stonework that spoke of the castle’s grandeur.

“I was thinking… what if we turned this into a nursery?” Kane asked, and I could hear slight hesitation in his voice.

My heart did a little flip at the suggestion. He was already planning for our baby, already thinking about creating a space for our child to grow up in.

He walked quickly to the wall and tugged down a heavy tapestry, revealing a door I hadn’t seen

before.

“There’s a nice room on the other side of this. Big enough for the three of us at first. We can move the baby here when it’s a bit older. I wanted a room close to the nursery, just in case.” His words started coming faster, more nervous. “Would you… I mean, if you’re staying, that is. If you want to go back to Wolfspire, it’s okay. I can take a few days a week to visit you there, or maybe I can move the capital closer to the mountain, so we’re not so far away-”

“Kane,” I interrupted with a smile, watching him ramble anxiously.

Chapter 38-1

Claim

The man who could command armies and intimidate grown lycans was nervous about asking me

to live with him. It was endearing as hell.

“I’d like to stay here. With you. Start our family in this castle as we fix what Kellan broke.”

He stared at me for a few seconds, relief and joy warring across his features. Then he walked until he was standing directly in front of me, his hands reaching up to cup my face.

“Simone…” he whispered, and then dropped to one knee.

My breath caught in my throat. Was he really-?

“I’ve been wanting to do this since the first time I saw you, love. I can’t imagine a life without you in it, nor do I want to. You’re everything I could’ve asked for. Everything I ever dared to wish for.” His voice was rough with emotion. “I’m in love with you, Simone. You can’t even begin to fathom how

much I love you.”

He paused, swallowing hard before continuing. “If my parents were here today, they would’ve loved you as much as I do. That’s why I wanted to ask this with my mother’s ring.”

I gasped as the familiar ring appeared in his hand, catching the morning light and sparkling with diamonds and amethysts. The same ring he’d given me months ago, the one I’d thrown back at him in my anger and hurt.

“That was your mother’s?” I whispered, feeling terrible about how I’d treated it. Fuck. I was a shitty

person.

“It’s okay,” he said with a soft smile, reading the guilt on my face. “She would have understood. She would have wanted you to have it when you were ready.”
