Chapter 4
At Wellington Group’s downtown office, David Wilson, Chad’s friend and advisor, tossed the tabloid onto the desk
“Maybe show a little restraint. Leave her some dignity. Even a cornered rabbit will bite. What if she actually divorces
you?’
Chad lounged on the sofa, feet up, without a trace of concern. “Divorce? She won’t.”
The family assets were locked in trusts. His mother had made me sign a brutal prenup. If we split, I would walk away
with nothing.
Even if I could stomach losing the title, my own family would never let me. He had always been able to do whatever he
wanted, knowing I had no choice but to take it. This time wouldn’t be different.
David shrugged, unconvinced. “Olivia is gorgeous. Even walking away with nothing, she could find someone else in this
circle.”
Chad laughed coldly, tapping his cigarette. “In this whole city? Who would dare touch what’s mine?”
Just then, his secretary knocked and entered, handing him a document. “From Cedar Creek Family Court, Mr.
Wellington.”
Chad’s hand jerked, the cigarette burning his skin. David watched him open the file, a slow smile spreading across his
face. “Looks like your rabbit learned to bite.”
Chad threw him out and sat alone, staring at the divorce petition.
It wasn’t his first affair. It wasn’t the first time he had been caught. He didn’t know what had gotten into me.
He sat through important meetings, distracted, and drove straight home to Eagle Peak as soon as they ended.
But the housekeeper said I hadn’t come back since morning.
He called my phone.
When I answered, he demanded, “Where are you?”
