Chapter 6
Samantha’s engagement party was packed with guests and buzzing with excitement.
Her fiancé was a classmate from her study abroad days in England. Their families were evenly matched, their
relationship stable, and everyone agreed they made a perfect couple.
Both families took the union seriously, and the engagement party itself was as lavish as a wedding.
As night fell, I stood on the terrace and looked up at the bright moon. It struck me that Chad and I were about to end
our five-year marriage, yet we had never even had a proper wedding.
We had married in a rush that year, with barely any well wishes. No wonder it was all coming to nothing.
A drunken voice came from behind me. ‘Miss Hayes, I heard you and Chad Wellington are getting a divorce.”
I turned and recognized the man. It was Derek Vance. the spoiled second son of the Vance family.
He had pursued me loudly and publicly in the past, and I had turned him down every time. He had kept bothering me
until Chad showed up and made him back off.
I barely knew him, so I answered politely. “Sorry, but that’s my private business.”
I tried to walk past him back inside, but Derek stepped in front of me, blocking my way.
He was drunk, and his tone turned crude. “Don’t misunderstand me. Miss Hayes. I just figured since you’ll be single again
soon, maybe you’d reconsider me.”
“I don’t have the Wellington fortune, but I’m still young. Better than some old man, right?”
I raised my glass and threw my drink in his face. He wiped his wet cheek and grabbed my wrist tightly.
‘Don’t be ungrateful. Who do you think you are? You’re not the Hayes heiress anymore.”
“A woman Chad Wellington used and discarded, and I’m still willing to take you. You should be grateful.”
I didn’t want to cause a scene at Samantha’s engagement party, but I couldn’t break free from his grip.
Just as I struggled, a deep voice cut in. This is my sister’s celebration, Derek. Are you looking to cause trouble?”
Benjamin stood there in a black suit, his expression one of pure authority.
Derek let go of me immediately, his face breaking into a nervous smile. “Mr. Cole, I was just chatting with an old
acquaintance. I would never cause trouble on your sister’s big day
He made up an excuse and disappeared. I rubbed my wrist. He had squeezed so hard that tears stung my eyes from the

Once we were alone on the terrace, I thanked Benjamin politely.
“Miss Hayes.” he said, his voice was calm and steady, carrying quiet authority that made people keep their distance
I couldn’t imagine how someone as untouchable as he had thrown Jessica out of his hotel room.
“Divorce isn’t something to be ashamed of,” he continued. “Walk away from the wrong person, and you’ll find something
better than gossip.”
I blinked, then realized he must have mistaken the tears in my eyes for sadness over the divorce. I opened my mouth to
explain, then decided it wasn’t worth it.
I just smiled and nodded. “Thank you for the advice, Mr. Cole.”
Samantha and I had been close for years, but I had only met her brother Benjamin a handful of times. The most
memorable time was at a charity gala two years ago.
The room had been full of glamorous people in elegant clothes, clinking glasses and making small talk. Samantha and I happened to pass by a cigar lounge where men were laughing and talking.
Someone mentioned me. “No one keeps his wife in line like you do. Chad. Mine’s a total nightmare. If she were half as
obedient as your wife.”
Samantha and I slowed down. Then came Chad’s voice, casual and cold. “I married her when the Hayes family was
bankrupt. That was more than generous.”
“Paid off their debts in exchange for her knowing her place after the wedding. It was a fair deal.”
My fingers stiffened for a moment. I looked down, hiding any flicker of emotion, and when I looked up again, my
expression was perfectly calm.
But Samantha was much angrier than I was. She raised her hand to burst through the door, and I quickly pulled her
onto the terrace instead.
She rolled her eyes. “A man like that? Why keep him? Divorce him and take half his money.”
I slowly pulled my hand back. “The Wellingtons would never let me have that. I signed a prenup. And a divorce lawyer
costs a fortune. Selling the Clearwater villa wouldn’t even cover it.”
“So what? I’ll borrow the money from my brother. He has plenty. Enough to divorce him eight hundred times over
A cough came from behind a pillar on the terrace. A tall figure stepped out of the shadows. It was Benjamin.
Samantha rubbed her nose awkwardly. “Oh, hey. You heard all that? Please don’t tell anyone.”
Benjamin didn’t answer. He slowly put out his cigarette. Then he looked up, his eyes meeting mine. ‘Miss Hayes, if you

ever need money for a divorce lawyer, I’d be willing to help.
After the engagement party. Samantha begged me to spend Christmas with her in Lakewood I figured it would be a
good chance to clear my head, so I agreed.
Benjamin happened to be going to Lakewood for work, so we took his private jet..
The Christmas atmosphere on Regent Street in Lakewood was magical. Angel lights twinkled in the night sky like a
stream of stars.
After taking some photos, Samantha and I went to a restaurant. We ordered, and then she got up to use the bathroom.
leaving Benjamin and me alone at the table. We made small talk for a while.
Then Benjamin’s gaze landed on something behind me. I followed his eyes and froze.
At a table nearby. Chad and Jessica had just sat down. Chad must have sensed something too, because he looked up, and
our eyes met.
His expression darkened. He stood up and walked straight toward us.
