Chapter 8

Two police officers walked in.

Luca was behind them.

‘That’s him,” Luca said, pointing at Alessandro on the altar.

“That man illegally entered my wedding, stole my bride, and disrupted a lawful wedding ceremony. Arrest him.”

He swept his gaze around the room and added:

“I paid for everything at this wedding. Flowers, venue, catering, invitations. Every dime came out of my pocket.”

“Half the city is here to witness this moment.”

The officers looked at Alessandro. Then at the crowd.

“Sir, is what this man says true?”

Silence.

Even Luca’s family wouldn’t speak.

Finally, I did.

“Officers. This is between me and my husband. There’s no problem.”

Everyone turned.

‘And your husband is?” one officer asked.

I looked at the man beside me. Still holding my hand. Silent as stone.

“Him. Alessandro Costa.”

Luca went rigid. Like he’d been punched in the chest.

Not angry. Not sad.

Just… disbelieving.

He’d never imagined the woman who couldn’t live without him would stand beside another man and call him that

I nodded at Gianna.

She pulled a folder from my bag and handed it to the officers.

‘Venue contract Floral invoices. Catering agreements. All signed by me.”

“Mr. Vitale helped set up the venue. But this wedding-from beginning to end-was mine.”

Luca’s face drained white.

Marco broke first. He stormed toward me. jabbing his finger. His voice shook.

“Rebecca. Do you have no conscience at all? Luca stayed up night after night planning this wedding. And now you’re

saying it’s yours and another man’s? What did you think he was? A free wedding planner?”

Matteo piled on. “Yeah. Luca gave you everything. You turn around and marry his enemy, using his work? You’re ice cold.

Rebecca.

Luca didn’t move.

He didn’t shout. Didn’t cry.

He just looked at me.

“Rebecca. I came back.”

“You’ve known me for ten years. When have I ever let you down?”

“Yeah. I’ve been a bastard. I’ve been insane. But I always held you in my heart. You know me better than anyone.”

He drew a breath. His voice cracked.

“But him. Do you know what he did last week? He’s had his eye on the Sicily project for years. I took it from him. He’s

using you to get back at me.”

He held out his hand.

Palm up. The way he always did when I was upset. Reaching.

“Come here, Rebecca. I won’t leave you again. I swear.”

“Come home. Let’s start over.”

His hand hung in the air. Trembling.

One second. Two, Three.

Then I heard my own voice. Flat. Final.

“Luca. It’s too late.”
