Chapter 138 138- Never Forget Dragons Mate For Life
LEXI
I barely make it halfway through the page before two things become painfully obvious. One, Blake has apparently been basically throwing himself at me since the moment we met, and I somehow missed it completely. And two… I should definitely not be trying to process dense, emotionally loaded dragon psychology while concussed.
“Okay, nope,” I mutter, my head throbbing as I drop the paper onto the bed beside me. The words blur slightly as I pull my hand back, pressing my fingers lightly to my temple.
“That was a terrible idea.” I mumble to myself. Blake looks concerned. I blink a few times, trying to refocus, then glance up at him with a faint, crooked
smile.
“So… I guess you like me then.” I say awkwardly. Blake nods without hesitation.
“Definitely.” He confirms. That makes me smile a little more properly, even through the headache.
“Well… you said it was accurate,” I continue, nudging the paper slightly with my fingers.
“But I’m not so sure about all of it. Especially that last part.” I pick it up again just long enough to read the line out loud, even if it makes my head protest.
**Dragons are undeniably powerful, but poorly suited to coexistence. Their strength lies in magic and dominance rather than connection.”” I wrinkle my nose
and shake my head.
“Yeah, no. I don’t buy that.” I tell him. Blake arches a brow slightly, watching me.
“I don’t think you’re poorly suited to coexistence,” I add more firmly.
“I like having you around. And I’ve told you before, you have way more strengths than just being physically strong.” I remind him. That earns me a small smile from him, something softer than usual. I hesitate for a second, then glance back at the page before setting it aside properly this time.
“So… before I get completely sidetracked by all of that, what did you actually WANT me to get out of reading it?” I ask. His hand moves again, slow and grounding as it traces along my back.
“I wanted you to understand something,” he says quietly.
“I don’t want you to be part of my hoard. I never did.” His voice is steady, but there’s something underneath it, something tighter.
“I’ve just been waiting for you to decide you want it. To… claim it.” He explains. I go still.
“Claim… it?” I repeat, trying to follow.
“Claim me,” he corrects softly. That lands harder than anything else he’s said tonight.
“My hoard…” he continues, exhaling slowly, like this is difficult for him to put into words.
“There’s no point to my hoard without you. It’s only valuable to me because you are.” He says quietly. He looks… embarrassed. Actually embarrassed. And it hits me all at once, just how much he’s putting on the line here. Blake, who is always controlled, always confident, is standing here essentially offering me everything he has, everything he is, and waiting to see if I’ll take it. After everything, after messing up, after being told no… he’s still choosing to be honest

instead of retreating. And I know him. I’ve seen how people treat him, how his family treats him. He’s spent his whole life being rejected. He doesn’t even try to get their approval anymore. But he wants mine. Me. Enough to give up everything he’s got. My chest tightens. I open my mouth to answer him, because I WANT to answer him, but before I can get a single word out, he lifts a finger and presses it gently against my lips.
“Wait,” he says, his expression serious now.
“Not right now. Please.” he stops me. I blink up at him, startled.
“I want you to think about it properly,” he continues.

“Not while you’re scared. Or in pain. Or concussed. Or feeling guilty about killing someone.” His tone is calm but firm.
“I don’t want an answer you give because of everything that’s happening right now. I want the real one.” He explains. I hesitate… then nod slowly. He lowers
his hand. He says he doesn’t want an answer, but I can’t just leave it there either. Not when he looks like that. Not when I know what that kind of
vulnerability costs him. So instead of answering with words, I lean in carefully and press a soft, brief kiss to his lips.
Blake exhales against me, something in him loosening, before he pulls back slightly, one hand steadying me like he doesn’t trust my balance right now.
“Good,” he murmurs, a faint, satisfied smirk tugging at his mouth. I huff out a quiet, slightly dazed laugh.
“Now, how did you end up here exactly?” he adds, shifting gears. The sudden topic change throws me for a second, but I manage to piece it together,
explaining everything, running, hiding, the spellcasting teacher (who Blake informs me is Professor Farrow, which honestly sounds made up because I swear
I’ve never heard that name before), the whole thing with the orb, Professor Cage showing up, and then… somehow ending up here through the bathroom.
Blake listens, focused.
“Well, we’re not in the hallway anymore. This room is… somewhere else. Not connected to the dorms right now.” he says once I finish, glancing around slightly. I blink at him.
“Really?” I ask.
“Really.” He confirms.
“Huh.” I let my head fall back slightly against his shoulder.
“One day I am definitely going to figure out how the Academy actually works,” I mutter. \
“Good luck with that.” he answers wryly. Then I sigh, rubbing at my eyes, my head throbs harder.
“So… where have you been?” I ask, squinting up at him. He hesitates. Looks… mildly guilty.
“I shouldn’t have left,” he mutters. I roll my eyes, and instantly regret it.
“Ow. Okay, bad idea,” I groan, pressing my fingers to my temple again.
“And you’re not my babysitter,” I add weakly. His expression tightens slightly as he gently pushes my hair back, inspecting the side of my head more carefully.
“I need to get you to the nurse. If she’s back…” he says.
“Back?” I echo.

“Yes.” He exhales slowly.
“I found Matthews. He’s… not in good shape. I don’t know if he’s going to be okay. Layla, the nurse, and Principal Istvan are all with him. Or they were half an hour ago.” He explains. I stare at him, my brain trying, and failing, to fully process that.
“Professor Matthews is” I start, then stop, wincing.
“You know what? No. Too much. Thinking hurts.” I say painfully.
“There’s nothing you can do for him right now,” Blake says firmly.
“You need to focus on you.” He pauses.
“Ellorie-Rae is fine, by the way. Before you ask. I put her to bed.” He adds. Relief washes through me so fast it almost makes me dizzy all over again. How is
it that Blake somehow manages to fix all the things that have me worried.
“Okay, good.” I breathe, sagging slightly against him. I close my eyes for a second, just… letting that settle.
“So what do we do?” I ask quietly.
“I’ll call the principal,” he says.
“Find out where they are. You need someone who knows how to deal with…” He gestures vaguely to my head.
“Yeah. That seems fair.” I mumble. I shift slightly, relaxing into him without even thinking about it this time, letting some of the tension finally drain out of
my body.
“Thanks, Blake,” I say softly. For now… I’m okay letting him take the lead. I just need to not fall apart for a little bit longer. Blake will take care of me.
Blake pulls out his phone and calls Principal Istvan, his arm still steady around me as if he doesn’t quite trust me to stay upright on my own. I listen to his side of the conversation, my head throbbing in time with every word, trying to follow along despite the way everything feels slightly delayed and fuzzy.
“Is he alive?” Blake asks first, getting straight to the point. There’s a pause, then a faint shift in his expression, relief, just barely there.
“Good.” He answers. He listens for another moment.
“We’ve got a different problem here. There are hunters all over the Academy. They’re still looking for her.” He tells them. I swallow, my fingers curling slightly into his shirt again without really thinking about it. There’s a sharper response from the other end this time, too muffled for me to make out the
words, but I can tell she’s concerned.
“Are you both somewhere safe?” Principal Istvan asks, her voice just loud enough for me to hear through the phone.
“Yes,” Blake answers immediately. Then, after the briefest hesitation he continues.
“But Lexi is injured. Someone needs to look at her.” he tells them,
“Pretty sure I have a concussion,” I add, my voice hoarse and a little unsteady as I lean closer to the phone. There’s a shuffle of movement on the other end, voices overlapping for a second before one of them cuts through clearly.
*Blake, this is Layla. Can you get Lexi to the infirmary safely?” She asks. Blake doesn’t even pause.

“Yes.” He responds.
“Good,” she says, quick and decisive.
“Get her there. I want to move Matthews as well, we’ll bring him in. We should be there in about half an hour. Then I can take a look at Lexi’s head.” She
explains.
“Done,” Blake replies, already shifting into action mode. He hangs up without another word. For a moment, neither of us moves. The room feels… still. Too still Like everything that just happened is catching up all at once, settling into something real and unavoidable. I let out a slow, heavy sigh, my head
tipping slightly forward as I gather what little energy I have left.
“You know what this means?” I ask quietly. Blake nods, his expression softening just a fraction as he looks at me.
“Yeah.:Sorry, Lexi… we’ve got to go.” he says, almost apologetically. I close my eyes for half a second, bracing myself. Safe or not. Rest is over.
