Chapter 13
Hayley had no way to dodge.
Boom! Crash!
The deafening sound of vehicles flipping filled the air.
Hayley’s head rattled violently. The airbag had gone off.
At the huge intersection, a massive truck had slammed into about eight smaller cars, flipping them sideways and completely blocking the road. Her car was balanced under one of the giant tires, just
inches away.
After the near-death dodge, Hayley’s head was buzzing from the airbag. She hammered at it, trying to
start the car again.
“Damn it!”
The car was busted.
Hayley didn’t have cars on her must-buy list because time was short and money was tight. Besides, after surviving the apocalypse for so long, she rarely needed a car anyway.
Even if she had a car, she would have no fuel later on.
Fuel was one of the rarest resources during the apocalypse. You needed it for everything, so it would be
a waste to use it for a car. 1
Hayley had adapted. For short trips, she walked. For medium distances, she had a tricked-out bike. For long distances? Forget it. Who needed to go that far, anyway?
Apocalypse didn’t reward stupidity. Running around was just asking to die. So, fuel-powered cars weren’t
a priority.
But right now, this car failing was a real curveball.
“Argh!”
“Arghh!!”
Outside, rustling sounds were getting closer.
Hayley rubbed her head, cleared the fog, and calmly scanned her surroundings. She unbuckled her seatbelt and pushed the door open.
In her hand, an iron shovel appeared.
Knives were useless against zombies. They had thin blades, which targeted a narrow surface. Once they sank in, they were hard to pull out.

However, a shovel was perfect.
Bang!
Hayley smashed the closest zombie granny’s head flat with one strike. Then, she kicked. With a crack, the shovel’s edge sank into the zombie’s skull, severing her brain stem.
That one was done.
Hayley twisted the shovel, slightly disappointed, then pulled it free.
It was still an early stage-the zombies didn’t have cores in their heads yet. Killing them could be fast, brutal, and simple.
Bang, bang!
Bang, bang, bang!
Bang!
She found a spot where zombies were fewer and charged with a shovel in hand. She cleared the road behind the wreck, smashing and crushing efficiently.
Most zombies were clustered near the front of the crash-the bloodiest area. Hayley moved quickly and quietly, creating minimal noise.
Everything went smoothly. She dashed out of the wreckage while the zombies were still scattered and
not a lot.
Just as she was about to clear the intersection, a scream came from a nearby car-another wreck, but the people inside had survived.
It was an expensive sports car.
“Ah! She’s killing people!”
The terrified girl in the passenger seat screamed, clutching her boyfriend’s hand. She watched Hayley
wreak havoc outside.
Hayley glanced coldly at them. The car’s airbags had gone off, too.
She looked away.
A useless car, just as useless as the people inside.
Hayley kept moving. She still needed to find a car to escape, or she’d have to run out of the city on foot.
Then, the doors of a car behind her swung open.
“Can you take us with you?” yelled a young man in the driver’s seat, instantly seeking help. “Take us somewhere safe! I’ll pay you! My dad’s the chairman of Eastplane Corporation! We’ve got money! Name your price-I’ll give it to you!”
