Chapter 163

Serena

I had been watching my phone ring consistently for days knowing that there would come a time where he wouldn’t take such silence anymore.

And this was it already.

I was sitting in my office going through my work. My phone had been vibrating with messages from him and also calls from him but I had left everything unattended.

My head was yet to be unwrapped from the last time we had a conversation. Every time he opened his mouth, he reminded me the reason I wanted to leave the marriage, even his face alone was a reminder.

“I need to see her!” Kieran’s voice came from outside my office door.

“You cannot go in sir, she is not in!” My assistants voice followed but I could tell that there was nothing that could come out of her trying to stop him.

The door swung open.

Kieran stood in the office dressed in a dark blue suit, not one strand of his air was out of place and his face was twisted into a stormy rage.

Behind him, my assistant pressed her hands together. “I am so sorry ma’am. I tried to stop him but he…”

“It’s fine,” I told her. “You can go.”

She pulled the door shut.

Kieran walked in and stopped in the middle of the room. His jaw was set and both hands hung at his sides.

“Why haven’t you been answering?” he asked.

“I was busy, as you can see, I’m at work,” I said.

“I called six times, Serena.”

“I know.” I set my pen down. “I saw.”

He stared at me. “Why didn’t you come home?”

“I needed time to think.” I said. “That’s the truth.”

He crossed to the chair across from my desk, sat, and the chair took his weight. For a moment neither of us said anything. I watched him press both hands flat against his knees and look at the floor and then look back up.

“I’m willing to give you time,” he said. “Whatever you need. I mean that.” He kept his voice low, choosing each word. “But Serena, we sat down together and we made a decision. You said you’d try again. I said I’d do better. I meant it when I said it and I still mean it.” He held my gaze. “What I can’t have is you going around putting people in hospitals while you’re carrying our child. Whatever Sophie has done or hasn’t done, that can’t be

your response.”

I looked at him.

This conversation had started in the same place every time. And every time it ended the same. I argued. He pushed back. I argued more. He dug in. Nothing moved.

If I wanted something different to happen then I had to make the first step to doing something different. Kieran and I had been playing this same game for months now. The same fight, one person needing a divorce and the other not wanting the same thing. 377

make sure he wins, even going as far as to throw me in prison.

Kieran was smart, and I had to be like him or better still,

smarter.

“I didn’t mean to hurt Sophie,” I said giving him the pay innocent look I could come up with.

His eyes narrowed slightly staring at me like he could tell what was on my mind.

He genuinely couldn’t.

This plan do not need me arguing daily with him about anything. All I had to do was become the wife he had needed for so long, according to him, the wife I used to

“I was emotional,” I said. “I lost control of myself and that wasn’t right.” I sat forward and folded my hands on the desk. “I should go and apologize to her. I want to.” I stood. “Where is she? Is she still in the hospital?”

Kieran’s eyes narrowed and his chin came up staring at me strangely. “What are you doing?”

it to her face.” I looked at him. “Which ward is she in?”

He stood slowly, the chair scraping back, and put his hand on my arm before I could move toward the door.

“Serena.” He looked at me then cleared his throat. “You

don’t have to do that.”

I looked at his hand on my arm.

“But I did something wrong to her,” I said. “I have to apologize.”

He shook his head. “Admitting to me you went wrong is fine, no need to apologize.”

He let go but he never took his eyes off me. He stayed watching me, making sure he was certain the woman in

front of him was his wife and not someone else.

“When are you coming home?” he suddenly asked perhaps he was weighing just how much I was will to go with the acting.

“Tonight,” I said. “After I finish here.” I picked up the pen on my desk. “If you want to come pick me up, you can:53

“What are you planning?” he asked.

I looked up at him. “Nothing,” I said. “I’m not planning anything. I’m tired, Kieran. I’m tired of fighting you, tired of arguing, tired of going in circles. None of it has gotten me anywhere and none of it is good for the baby.” I held his gaze. “We agreed to second chances. I’m going to honor that. I’m going to come home tonight and I’m going to give you one.”

He looked at me for a long time.

I didn’t blink and didn’t look away. I watched him with a smile on my face trying to give a convincing act. “I have to return to work.”

“Okay, Kieran.”

He nodded once, but his eyebrows were still furrowed. He really could not figure out what was up with him. He glanced over his shoulder at me. Then he walked out of the office..

The door clicked shut behind him.

I sat down and pressed both palms flat on the desk and 53
