Andrew got to his feet.

Trevor rushed to stand before me, even before I even figured

out what I was about to do. His hand was on my chest and his

eyes were on mine aiming to calm me down.

“Calm down,” Trevor said.

Andrew was standing there and the anger within me needed

somewhere to go. I couldn’t tell if this anger was targeted at him or not. But I do know that my blood was boiling and there

was so much hate and despise I felt towards him.

He was just the perfect candidate to receive the negativity

burning through me. He was here, he was annoying and he

kept making comments about my wife.

“Leave,” I growled at Andrew again. Seeing him was making my anger worse and there was no way this rage wasn’t

directed at him.

For him to be able to provoke such in me only meant that he

was the cause

Andrew looked at me. He picked up his jacket. He moved toward the door and stopped with his hand on the frame. He turned back and looked at me again, with his hands loose at

his sides.

“You can keep being angry at me,” he said. “That’s fine. But you know where this is actually coming from. You’re angry at yourself. That’s the truth. You’re angry because Serena

doesn’t want you anymore and instead of accepting that and

giving her what she’s asking for, you’re keeping her here.

You’re forcing her to stay in a marriage that’s over. That’s what’s eating at you.” He opened the door. “Not me.”

Fucking bastard!

I pushed Trevor off me and dashed after him. How dare

he say I was keeping my wife here like she was a kind of

prisoner.

She loved me! She wants to stay in this marriage, she doesn’t want to leave and there is nothing Andrew or anyone else can say or do that will change that fact.

“Fucking bastard!” Before I reached the door, he already closed it, keeping himself hidden from my claws because I would have ripped him apart.

she was giving me a second chance and I was going to prove to her that she will not regret it.

The baby is mine, Serena is mine. She married me, she is my

wife.

“That was wrong,” I heard Trevor say. “He didn’t do anything

wrong.”

I lifted my eyes and met his own, and he was staring at me

without the hint of fear in his expression. “Do you want to join

him?”

Trevor looked at me silently for a long moment. He cleared

his throat.

“Fine,” he said. He stood up and picked up his jacket. “I’ll

leave.”

He left.

I stood in the apartment in the quiet. Alone with my emotions. and my rage. The food on they did not finish and the woman

who was supposed to be sitting in front of me sharing wine

and conversation was in the room.

Serena was asleep.

I stood in the doorway and looked at her and slowly the

rapid beating of my heart and the fury around me suddenly

dissipated.

The anger gave way to something almost resembling melancholy.

I took a breath, walked to the bathroom and showered. I came out and got into bed without waking her.

I woke up to the soft sounds around me. Serena was already up getting ready to leave for the day.

She stood at the mirror in a fresh set of clothes, fixing her hair, her bag already on the chair. She looked at me in the

reflection.

“Are you still upset with me?” I asked.

She turned from the mirror.

“I’m not upset,” she said. “I don’t have anything to be angry 4/9

I suddenly did not know what to say. She waited for a

response from me for a minute before she turned back to the

mirror.

“Do you hate me?” I blurted out.

She turned around again and looked at me for a moment.

“I really don’t have it in me to hate anyone,” she said with a shrug. “That’s the truth.”

I sat up. “All right.”

“I have an appointment with Elan today,” she said, turning back to the mirror. “I might not be home at the usual time.”

“I’ll come with you.” I offered quickly.

She shook her head in response picking up her bag. “There’s

no need.”

“I’ll pick you up, then. When you’re done.”

She looked at me again through the mirror. “I’ll be driving myself.”

the woman I married was dead and buried and the person

who stood in front of me was someone else.

The Serena that glued herself to me and wanted me to

accompany her everywhere was a distant memory. Now,

there was a woman who was fed up and wanted nothing

from me.

I got out of the bed. “Is this how we’re going to keep doing

this? Is this how we’re going to be with each other?”

She turned and looked at me directly. Her eyes held no

emotion, no reaction just pure nonchalance.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “I’m not trying to be difficult. I just don’t want you wasting your time waiting around for me.” She picked up her bag. “That’s all it is.”

“Okay,” I said.

She went to the door.

I sat on the edge of the bed and listened to the elevator

close.

“Serena,” he said, looking up from his desk. “Good. I wanted to catch you before rounds.” He set the file he was holding

down. “There’s a new client I’d like to introduce you to. Before

I set up the introduction, I want to know honestly: can you manage the additional case load right now? With Elan and everything else you’re carrying?”

I smiled happily at the thought of another client. Misha was the kind to always recommend high profile people and as much as I treat, my name would travel widely and I would be known as a doctor rather than Mrs Thawthorne.

“I might be able to,” I said. “Tell me more about the client and I’ll give you a clearer answer.”

“I’ll put together the details and come back to you,” he said. “I

don’t want to bring you in overwhelmed.”

“I’ll be fine, Misha.”

He looked at me for a moment, then set the file down. “I’ll

inform you once the guest is available.”

The morning moved through its usual shape. Patients came

and went. Notes piled up. A consultation ran long and pushed everything back by forty minutes. I ate at my desk and 719 answered three messages from the hospital administrator

about Kieran until my phone showed two in the afternoon

I signed off on the last chart, picked up my bag, and walked

toward the exit.

Kieran stood by the front entrance in his work coat with his keys already in his hand, leaning against the wall outside the

main doors.

I pushed through the door and stopped.

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

“I want to take you to Cartridge mansion,” he said.

We had the conversation this morning anf inhad specifically

told him there wasn’t any need for him to drop me, but

Kieran was a man that was deaf to the words of other

people.

“You don’t need to do that.”

“I know I don’t need to,” he said. “I want to.”

“Have you eaten?” he asked.

My lips parted but I hesitated. If I told him I had eaten he would force himself and accompany me to see Elan, but if I agreed to lunch, he might just get tired and agree to wait

home for me.

“Not properly,” I said.

“Come eat with me first. Then I’ll drive you.”

I looked at him standing there with his keys in his hand.

“Okay,” I said.
