Serena stood two steps behind me and said nothing.
Her face was forward, her hands at her sides. Callum’s eyes
moved from Sophie and landed on her. He smiled.
I opened my mouth.
“Dr. Serena.”
I turned.
Misha crossed the lobby in long strides and stopped between
Callum and Serena, his hand raised toward Callum.
“Forgive me,” he said. “Dr. Serena is the physician you were
scheduled to see, but I’m afraid she’s on her way home for
the evening. We’ll have to reschedule for tomorrow, if that
works for you.”
Serena nodded beside him. “Tomorrow morning,” she said to
Callum. “I’ll make sure we have time set aside.”

Serena reached down and put her hand briefly on the small boy at Callum’s side. Then she turned and walked toward the
exit.
I dropped Ethan and ran after her immediately.
“Serena.”
She stopped then turned around to look at me..
“Are you angry?” I asked.
She looked at me for a moment. Then the corner of her
mouth pulled up.
“No,” she said. “I’m not angry.”
The smile on her face was distant, carried without a single
emotion behind it.
“Callum assumed what he assumed because I was the one
who enrolled Ethan at that school. I used my name. He had
no reason to think anything different.”
“I know,” she said.

She shook her head slightly. “Kieran. If people want to call Sophie Mrs. Thawthorne, let them. It’s a name. I don’t care
what happens to it.”
Her words were like knives targeted straight do my heart.
She started to turn but I caught her wrist.
She stopped, looked at her wrist, then looked up at me.
“What do you care about?” I asked, feeling a dryness in my
throat.
Her brow pulled in slightly. “What?”
“You don’t care about the name. You don’t care if people think Sophie is my wife. You don’t care about dinner, about
what I cook, about whether I’m in the same room as you.” I
held her wrist. “What do you actually care about?”
She looked at me with her head tilted.
“I care about getting home,” she said.
“Do you care about me?” I blurted out.

“Since when,” she said, “was care something that existed

I didn’t answer.
“You didn’t marry me because you cared about me,” she said. “You married me because I was available and because I’d
make a decent luna and because the mate bond was there.
That’s the full list. I’ve known that for a long time. I’m not angry about it anymore.” She held my gaze. “I stopped being angry about it.”
“When we got married,” I said, “I cared about you.”
She looked at me.
“Is that so,” she said.
“It’s true.”
She looked at the space between us for a moment. “I never
realised,” she said. Then she looked back up at me. “Okay.
Maybe we cared about each other once. That was then. Things changed. If you want to take another wife, that’s your decision. I’ve already let go of the luna duties. I’ve already let go of the wife duties.” She looked at me. “I’d understand if

Her name came out louder than I expected. She stopped
walking but didn’t turn around. My chest pulled in hard. My wolf pushed against my ribs. I thought about the conversation with Trevor in the corridor, how I said love had
nothing to do with any of it, that I had a reason for marrying
Serena and that was it. Even then those words felt wrong.
And now she was standing two feet away telling me she’d let go of everything, and the back of my eyes began to sting.
“What about when you were in love with me?” I said.
She turned.
She pressed her lips together and shrugged with one
shoulder.
“I was a fool,” she said. “Between us, things like that were
never going to hold. I should have known that from the
beginning.”
I shook my head. I crossed toward her. I took her hand.
“I liked it,” I said. “When you were in love with me. I liked it
and I want it back.” I looked at her. “You can still be in love 5/8
with me.”

“It’s already too late, Kieran.” She said it plainly. “I don’t love
you anymore. I’m not angry and I’m not grieving it. My heart turned to stone a long time ago. What I feel now is ease, for myself, for the baby, for the life I’m going to have when this is over.” She looked up at me. “Between us, love isn’t what’s
needed. It was never what was needed.”
I looked at her, my vision fading as my heart ached in my
chest.
She slid her hand out of mine and turned and walked toward
the car.
We got into the car together.
She was in the passenger seat with her phone in both hands,
the screen lit. She smiled at something on it. She typed. She
set the phone in her lap and looked out the window and then
picked it up again.
I watched the road.
My ribs pressed in from the inside. Cora moved against

We got home. Serena walked past the kitchen and went to the bathroom. She came out in her night clothes, got into
bed, and turned her back to the room.
I stood in the bathroom and looked at my own face in the
mirror.
She said she didn’t love me anymore.
These were the same words Trevor had said to me and
hearing it from her hurt more than hearing it from him.
How could she simply come into that realization?
This couldn’t be the truth. She loved me so much how could
she easily just stop?
After showering, I stood at the edge of the bed and looked at
her.
What kind of reaction was this?
She claimed she held no anger and all she wanted was ease. What ease? She was obviously angry. She wanted more for the baby, she wanted something else but she didn’t want to
say it.

I went down on my knees on the floor in front of her.
She was facing me now, her eyes closed, her breathing slow.
I took her hands from where they rested against the blanket
and held them.
“Sophie isn’t important to me,” I said. “What happened in the
lobby wasn’t about her. I was helping with something that started a long time ago. I should have ended it sooner. I’m sorry.” I held her hands. “Sophie isn’t Mrs. Thawthorne. She never was and she never will be. That’s always been you.
That’s always going to be you.”
Serena’s eyes didn’t open.
Without waking, she drew her hands back and shifted onto
her other side.
Turning her back to me.
