The first time I heard Tessa’s name again was from my roommate. “Noah! Come look–Tessa’s about to make a move on you.”
I set down the book in my hands. “Who did you say?”
“Tessa. You know, that girl everyone on campus talks about–the one who’s hopelessly obsessed with Adrian. What’s her deal? She couldn’t get him, so now she’s switching targets?”
I smiled. My roommate thought I was laughing at how overconfident Tessa was. But really, I was secretly thrilled.
My crush was finally about to come to light.
Back in high school, I met a girl online who was overweight, just like me. At the time, I was being bullied so badly that I had started thinking about ending my life.
She understood exactly how I felt. She said she was the same, and she made a plan for us to lose weight together.
That was why I survived, and why I lost the weight.
But after that, I lost contact with her. All I remembered was her beautiful name–Tessa.

But Tessa was unhappy that entire day. Into the phone, she said coldly, “Even if you die, I still won’t come see you. If I’m going back on my word, I learned that from you.”
And yet the moment she hung up, she broke down sobbing.
The only thing I could do was stay by her side.

On our wedding day, Tessa was so happy that she drank a lot. She wrapped her arms around me, bit gently at my ear, and whispered, “You were right. We knew each other a long, long time ago.”
And yes, I believed her.
The bond between us was too deep to be explained without another lifetime.
