CHAPTER THREE HUNDRED & FIFTEEN

Talia’s POV

I watched him eat the hidden mushroom. “Good, isn’t it?” I asked, smiling.

“That is good,” Nolan replied, taking a sip of his water. “Beef Burgundy… I can’t believe I forgot about the dish.”

“We’ve been so busy lately. We really have been neglecting ourselves,” I said as I cut another piece of meat with another small mushroom hidden underneath it. “Have some more. I’ll tell them to make this

more often.”

I held the fork out to him again. He leaned forward and took it.

“I agree. I’ll let Annie know,” Nolan said.

For a moment, I was somewhat relieved. This imposter wasn’t Jason, so that was at least good. Then, I

noticed a small crease appear between his eyebrows. The corner of his mouth quivered as if he was trying not to cough. My pulse quickened. Was I imagining things?

I ate slowly, watching him over the rim of my cup. The crease between his eyebrows had become more pronounced. He was sweating now.

“Are you okay? You seem to be sweating,” I said.

The imposter gave a weak, nervous laugh before saying, “That bite had a bit of spice.” I noticed his hand trembled as he reached for his glass of water.

“But you said that was the best part,” I pressed as I cut him a third piece. I noticed the imposter hesitate to take it. There was a flicker of doubt in his eyes before he forced himself to eat. He couldn’t stop now or it would have given him away.

With each chew, his face became even more flushed. He tried to clear his throat. The sound seemed strained, and panicked.

The imposter pushed his chair back quickly. It almost fell over as he stumbled to his feet.

I gasped at his sudden movement. “Nolan, are you okay?” I asked in fake worry.

“Forgive me. Something urgent has come up,” the imposter said.

His voice had gone hoarse. He swallowed twice while he was speaking, and the second swallow he grimaced.

“Do you need my help? I can…”

“No, no, my dear. You keep eating. I’ll catch up later,” he said quickly, cutting me off.

The imposter left the dining hall so abruptly that his chair finally fell over. Hand over my mouth, I suppressed the urge to laugh as a giddy thrill ran through me as I watched him flee.

‘If we’re lucky, he’ll die from asphyxiation. That’ll teach him for trying to trick us,’ my wolf huffed.

When the door clicked closed, I listened to his fading footsteps with a feeling of satisfaction. ‘But knowing it is Jason doesn’t help him, and him dying now certainly won’t help either. We need to figure out how to get out of here,’ I answered.

The weight of my situation was settling uncomfortably over the short-lived victory. I didn’t have time to gloat. I now knew it was Jason, but I still didn’t know what he was up to.

Then I stood up and went to the door. I opened it slightly and called, “Annie, come here. I need you.”

She appeared at the doorway within seconds as I was sitting back down. She had been waiting just

outside.

“Yes, Luna.”

“Come sit and eat with me. I do not want to eat alone.”

“I should not.”

“Sit,” I said firmly.

Annie sat down. I slid the second plate, the one the impostor had barely touched, across the table to her. This time, she began eating without waiting for permission.

‘Why did you bring the little traitor in here? What is your plan?’ my wolf asked.

‘I need to know where we are. This place looks like Bloodmoon, but it is not Bloodmoon. The bond does not reach Nolan from here. I need to confirm where we actually are,’ I explained.

‘How? I doubt she knows anything,’ my wolf huffed.

‘I am sure he is careless around her and probably revealed more than he should have. As a child, she will answer a casual question without thinking about it the way an adult would,’ I said.

I watched Annie eat for a moment before asking, “How are you settling in at Bloodmoon? I know it is different from Silverfang.”

“It’s fine, Luna. Thank you,” Annie replied with a full mouth.

“What have they been having you do? I want to make sure they are not working you too hard.”

“I mostly work in the kitchen, clean, and bring food to guests. I’m trying to be a good maid.”

“You are doing well.”

“Thank you, Luna.”

“I’ve been thinking all morning. You should learn about trade routes. Clara visits nearby packs for exchanges. You know, pack, um…” I trailed off, pretending to forget.

“Oh, do you mean Moonbrook, Luna? The one to the east?” Annie responded without looking up from the

plate.

My stomach dropped, and I was glad that Annie wasn’t looking at me. It gave me a moment to compose myself and push down the dread I was feeling.

“Moonbrook. Of course. Thank you. I couldn’t remember.”

“Yes, Luna.”

“Thank you, Annie. Finish your food.”

Bloodmoon did not border Moonbrook. Bloodmoon did not border any pack closely. Moonbrook was

nowhere near it.

Jason brought me to one of the Rogue King’s houses and dressed it up to look like Bloodmoon. How was that even possible? That alarmed me more than actually being kidnapped.

‘Colin is at Moonbrook. He can help us,’ my wolf said.

‘Yes, but we would have to get there,’ I responded. Safety truly was right around the corner. I had been unconscious for two days. Nolan and Solon would already be searching for me. I would just have to get to the main road at least. If I were lucky, I could make my way to Moonbrook. Colin would take me in, and I could get word to Nolan and Solon. Then, we could finally end this foolishness. 1

I had my way out, but I was on borrowed time. I had to act before Jason did.
