One Night. One Mistake. Ch 20

Chapter 20

Elle’s POV

That milk with its gamey taste and odd supplements was too much for my sensitive pregnancy stomach.

As I rinsed my mouth, I noticed my surroundings for the first time. This bathroom-wasn’t like the human facilities downstairs. Pure silver

accents decorated the sink and mirror frame, and moonstone tiles lined the walls, their iridescent sheen catching the light in a way that

supposedly soothed werewolf senses.

Everything in this space screamed privilege and power-a stark reminder of the world I was now part of, whether I liked it or not.

I returned to the office with shaky legs, finding Brad by the floor-to-ceiling windows on the phone, his back straight as he gazed out at the city

below.

“I understand the concerns of the Frostclaw Pack,” he was saying, his voice carrying that unmistakable Alpha authority. “But Moonshade Bay

has always honored our treaties.”

Alex Gray entered silently, catching my eye with a brief, sympathetic smile before approaching Brad. He waited until Brad ended his call before

speaking in a low voice.

“Alpha, the representatives from the Frostclaw Pack have arrived early. I’ve arranged for them to wait in the executive dining room.”

Brad nodded. “Good. Have Chef Miles prepare the specialty cuts they requested.” He pocketed his lighter and straightened his already impeccable suit jacket. “We’ll join them in thirty minutes.”

I was halfway to my desk when Brad’s voice stopped me cold.

“You’re coming too,” he said, not a request but a command that made my spine stiffen.

I turned to face him, uncertainty flooding my veins. “Me? But I’

“Is there a problem?” His amber eyes narrowed slightly.

Alex stepped in smoothly. “Ms. West, the guest is Beta Sophia Luke from the Frostclaw Pack. She’s their lead negotiafer for the timber rights agreement.” He glanced at his tablet. “Do you have any dietary restrictions or preferences we should inform the kitchen about?)

My mouth went dry. A high-ranking Beta werewolf? A formal business lunch? I was just getting used to being Brad’s assistant, and now I was

expected to dine with werewolf royalty?

‘I’m not sure I should be there,’ I admitted. ‘I don’t know the first thing about timber rights or werewolf dining etiquette.”

Brad’s expression remained impassive, but I caught the slightest flaring of his nostrils-he was scenting my anxiety. “You’re carrying my child and wear my mark. As my mate, you’ll need to learn to handle these situations.”

I wanted to argue that our arrangement was about protecting the baby, not about me playing corporate werewolf wife, but the set of his jaw told me this wasn’t negotiable.

Hunderstand,’ I said finally, my heterochromatic eyes meeting his. ‘I won’t embarrass you or the baby.”

Something flickered across Brad’s face-surprise, perhaps before he returned to his stoic default. ‘Alex will brief you on the necessary

protocols.”

As Brad turned his attention back to his computer, I realized with sudden clarity that my life had irreversibly changed. The future I had once

envisioned was gone. Now I was thrust into a world of Alphas and Betas, pack politics and power plays.

After Brad left, Alex sent me information about the menu. I scrolled through it with growing unease-half the items I couldn’t even pronounce,

and the descriptions made my stomach turn. Items marked with a red moon symbol were specially prepared for werewolf metabolism.

Essentially, raw meat.

I spent the next twenty minutes frantically researching werewolf dining etiquette on my phone. No direct eye contact with the Alpha unless addressed first. Don’t reach for food until the highest-ranking wolf has begun eating. Never touch another werewolf’s plate or utensils.

At 12:30, I followed Alex’s directions to the executive dining area on the 40th floor. The dining facility was split into three distinct sections: ground level for human employees, second tier for department heads and most of the werewolf employees, and the third level, separated by

glass partitions, obviously for Alphas and special guests only.

As I walked through the main area, I felt dozens of eyes on me. Conversations hushed.

I kept my gaze forward, trying to project a confidence I absolutely did not feel. My hand instinctively moved to my neck, where Brad’s marking bite was still healing beneath my blouse’s collar-a constant reminder of my strange new status.

As I approached the stairs to the second level, a human woman stepped directly into my path with a look of barely contained disdain.

“Excuse me,” she said, her voice dripping with false politeness. “I believe you’re lost. Human administrative staff aren’t permitted beyond the

main dining area.”

I recognized Kayla Stone, the sales department manager who had always looked down on back-office staff like me.

“I’m heading to the executive dining room,” I replied evenly, trying to step around her.

She blocked my path again. “That area is reserved for executive leadership and special guests.’ Her eyes narrowed at my identification badge.

“We all know how you suddenly jumped from the back office to the executive floor. Not just sleeping your way to a promotion, but all the way

to the Alpha’s office? How desperate and pathetic.”

Heat rose to my cheeks, but I fought to keep my expression neutral, “Ms. Stone, I’d suggest you reconsider your assumptions. I’m here at Alpha

Rayne’s request.”

Kayla laughed mockingly. “Listen, honey, whatever you did to get that badge, you’re still just a human. You don’t belong in the executive dining room, and you certainly don’t belong anywhere near the Alpha.”

I felt a surge of anger mixed with humiliation.

I looked directly into Kayla’s eyes. “I don’t think you understand the situation. If you have concerns about Alpha Rayne’s decisions regarding his staff, perhaps you should address them with him directly.”

Kayla’s expression hardened. “This is ridiculous! Even if you’ve somehow charmed your way into some temporary position, you can’t possibly

think you’re authorized to enter the top-level dining area. That’s reserved for Alphas and their legitimate mates, not… whatever you are.”
