One Night. One Mistake. Ch 7

Chapter 7

Elle’s POV

I stared at Elizabeth Rayne’s expectant face, feeling the weight of her question press down on me like a physical force. The hospital room

seemed to shrink around us, the air growing thin.

My life had completely derailed in less than an hour. Pregnant. Heterochromatic mate. Rare genetic ability. And now, three impossible choices

laid out before me like cards in a rigged game.

I glanced at Brad, hoping for… I don’t know what. Reassurance? Guidance? His eyes met mine briefly before shifting away, his jaw clenched

tight.

“Well?” Elizabeth prompted, impatience edging her voice.

I took a deep breath, steeling myself. The reality was brutal but clear – I had no real choice at all.

“Fine,” I said, meeting Elizabeth’s gaze directly. “I accept.” My voice strengthened as I continued, “I know you need this child. I’ll become your…

mate or whatever you call it, and I’ll have this baby.”

Brad’s expression remained unreadable, though something flickered in his eyes – perhaps surprise at my directness. He didn’t wait for me to finish speaking before turning toward the door.

‘Since you’ve agreed, prepare yourself,” he said over his shoulder, voice flat and emotionless. “You can take leave from work to adjust yourself. I

have matters to attend to.”

The next morning, I found myself in what the staff called the “VIP suite – a hospital room that looked more like a luxury hotel.

A team of werewolf nurses and doctors checked on me constantly, their focus clearly on the potential Alpha heir I carried rather than on me.

Their noses would twitch slightly when they entered, as if assessing my scent for any changes.

‘Your vitals are excellent,” the head nurse informed me after the fifth check that morning. “The Alpha has arranged for you to stay until we’re

certain the pregnancy is progressing well.”

I nodded numbly, feeling like a prized breeding mare rather than a person. The thought of being confined to this room, luxurious as it was, made me feel claustrophobic.

‘I need some air,’ I declared, sliding off the bed. ‘I’m going for a walk in the garden I saw from the window.”

The nurse’s eyes widened. “Ms. West, I’m not sure that’s advisable in your condition-*

‘My condition is being six weeks pregnant, not invalid, I replied, pulling on the silk robe that had mysteriously appeared in my room overnight. “I just need to stretch my legs and clear my head.”

Before she could protest further, I slipped past her and out the door. The hallway was quiet, my bare feet silent on the plush carpet. Finding my way to the elevator, I descended to the first floor and followed signs to the garden.

The hospital’s garden was beautiful – carefully landscaped with flowering shrubs and meandering paths. I noticed some unusual plants I’d never

seen before, likely species preferred by werewolves for their scents or properties. Taking a deep breath of fresh air, I felt some of the tension

leave my shoulders.

I’d barely walked fifty feet when was suddenly surrounded by a group of werewolf nurses in crisp uniforms, their expressions tense and alarmed. The head nurse I’d evaded earlier hurried toward me, nostrils flaring.

“With all duel respect,” she said, her tone both respectful and scolding, “You’re carrying a potential Alpha heir – you shouldn’t be outside

without guards.”

The other nurses formed a protective circle around me, eyes scanning the surroundings as though assassins might leap from behind every

rosebush.

*Chairwoman Elizabeth has given strict orders,” the head nurse continued. “The Alpha’s mate must be protected at all costs.”

I looked around at their serious faces, the reality of my new situation sinking in further. As a human, I’d always had limited freedoms in

Moonshade Bay, but this was a different kind of restriction altogether.

“Fine,” I sighed, shoulders sagging. “I understand.”

They escorted me back inside, practically herding me toward the elevator. I felt like a prisoner, albeit one in a gilded cage.

Back on my floor, I decided to at least walk the hallway rather than return directly to my room. The corridor walls displayed portraits of past Rayne Alphas, stern-faced men and women with the same amber eyes as Brad.

As I neared the end of the hall, I noticed a group of humans in white chef uniforms pushing an elaborate food cart toward my room. The aroma

of meat wafted from under silver serving covers.

Curious, I quickened my pace, arriving at my room just as they were entering. Pushing through the door behind them, I froze in surprise.

Inside, several human chefs were arranging an elaborate spread on what had been a standard hospital table. At least fifteen dishes were being set out – appetizers, main courses, and desserts.

The chefs noticed me and immediately stood at attention, bowing slightly.

The oldest one said, “this is the lunch Alpha Rayne requested be sent up. If you find anything not to your liking, we can prepare alternatives

better suited to human tastes.”

I stared at the feast in disbelief. I… I can’t eat all this. It’s way too much.”

The chef smiled knowingly. “The Alpha will be joining you for lunch, ma’am. This is his normal midday meal.”

My stomach dropped. ‘Wait, what? Brad is coming here? To eat lunch?

Before the chef could answer, a chorus of respectful voices echoed from the hallway: “Alpha Brad.”

My body tensed instinctively, my back still to the door. I could feel the atmosphere in the room change the air pressure itself seemed to shift

with Brad’s arrival.

Chapter 7

I didn’t turn around, suddenly-unsure how to face the man who was now, by formal agreement, my mate yet still felt like a stranger. A dangerous, powerful werewolf stranger who could influence my entire future.

The sound of measured footsteps entered the room.

“Why are you just standing there?” Brad’s deep voice cut through the silence. “Sit down and eat. You need to maintain your nutrition.”

I turned slowly to face him. Brad stood there. Every human staff member had their eyes downcast, movements becoming more precise, more

careful.

He moved to the table with predatory grace, reaching into his pocket to retrieve a silver lighter. He flipped it open and closed a few times – a

habitual gesture, I guessed – before accepting a hot towel from an attendant. I watched, fascinated despite myself, as he meticulously cleaned

his hands with not one but three towels before finally sitting down.

Only then did he look up at me, his amber eyes unreadable. “Your food will get cold.”
