Chapter 114

I took in several deep breaths before entering the medical ward. Whatever negative feelings I still had from yesterday, I couldn’t let them get in the way of my work.

Stepping into the main room, I immediately felt everyone’s eyes land on me. Most looked surprised and grateful for my return. However, in the far corner, Bianca and a few of her followers wore looks of unenthused disdain.

Whatever, I thought.

“Evelyn.” Diana greeted me with a warm smile. “Hey, it’s good to see you back.”

“Thanks, it’s good to be back,” I told her. “Has there been any new problems since I’ve been gone?”

The woman merely shrugged while checking over her clipboard. “Not really, same old things. Restless patients. But no new admissions as of late. We’re just glad to have you back.”

My chest warmed at her sentiment. “Let’s get to it then.’

It was good to know that there hadn’t been any major new admissions into the ward. I grabbed my clipboard and began making my rounds. I started with the most critical group of patients. According to my charts, some of these rogues were suffering greatly from mental trauma.

Some never spoke. Some couldn’t stop rambling on the same handful of words. Others barely made sounds at all.

No matter the case, I could always sense the same energy of discomfort and pain.

It was heartbreaking.

It made me seriously wonder about the possible horrors that they’d been exposed to and endured prior to this. After Diana or one of the other medical staff members administered the initial painkiller, I would sit beside them and lay a hand gently on their arm. That gruelling, anxious feeling would slowly dissipate.

It brought back a welcoming sense of familiarity that I didn’t expect to need.

By the afternoon, the team broke for lunch. The group of us headed to the dining hall, where we gathered at one of the tables. I should have been hungry since I barely ate dinner last evening and forewent breakfast this morning.

But my nerves were still coiled.

“Hey, Evelyn. Tell us how the recruitment went for the blood drive,” Diana insisted,

Others around us chimed in with interest,

“It went really well,” I said. “Alexander and I were able to round up a lot of names.”

Bianca’s shrilling voice broke through the crowd. “I hear that the two of you made quite the pair yesterday,” she noted. “Everyone couldn’t stop talking about the chemistry between the two of you.”

I bit the inside of my cheek and refrained from letting my anger rise.

“That’s nice of you to mention, Bianca. However, everyone knows that Alexander and I are just friends.” Goddess, I still hoped we were. “My only attachments are solely to Kane.”

“Oh, really?” A doubtful smirk painted across her lips. “Because I couldn’t help but overhear a rather nasty fight break out between the two of you yesterday.”

Of course, she was listening.

“You always were the pack’s biggest nosy-body, Bianca,” Diana muttered over the rim of her cup. “My guess is that you had your literal ear pressed against the door.”

Bianca’s face broke out into a heavy blush. “Yeah, well… You can’t seriously sit there and tell me that everything is normal between you and K—”

“There you are!” A deep voice sounded behind us.

I raised my brows and glanced over my shoulder to find Kane staring right at me with a warm smile. I noticed the white envelope in his hand as he strode over to our table.

With sheer confidence, he locked his eyes on me and reached out to curl his hand in my ponytail.

“Hello, sweetheart,” he greeted. He closed the space between us and captured my lips in a kiss.
