Chapter 129

“Before you came in, I noticed something strange-a mark of some kind on one of the rogue’s neck,” she remarked.

My brows drew together in question. A mark? No one had mentioned anything about a mark.

“You’re certain?” I pressed.

“It didn’t seem like any sort of birthmark I’d ever seen before. Kane, if I had to sum up some kind of theory, it would be that given their erratic behavior and bizarre diagnosis, these men could have been injected with something.”

This theory sent chills down my spine and ice through my bloodstream.

“Should that be true, then that begs the question as to what the hell they were injected with,” I muttered.

“Kane, we should head back to the medical ward and check the other rogues to see if any of them carry the same mark,” Evelyn suggested eagerly.

My Gods, this woman was hell bent on risking her life tonight!

I took in a steadying breath, not wanting to trigger my wolf’s fuming rage once more. Between my natural exhaustion and all the energy I’d burned off from tearing through the house, I was shocked that I was still coherent.

“Evelyn, I wish you would take a moment to truly comprehend just how lucky you were for the fact that none of the rogues woke up,” I said quietly.

“Believe me, I know,” she noted softly. “Apart from my curiosity about the rogues’ condition, I genuinely wanted to know if I was still capable of treating them.”

I let out a huff. “I can honestly tell you that I’m not sure if I even want you to treat them as regular patients. If there isn’t any change in their behavior or symptoms, then we’ll have no choice but to eradicate them.”

The expression on her face told me that Evelyn wasn’t too keen on the idea of my placing the order of execution.

‘She’s not keen on the idea of rogues causing chaos, but she is a natural healer at heart,’ my wolf said.

Which means, she’s going to try and do everything she can to help them until there is no other choice…

A distorted grunt rumbled from my chest. I hadn’t bothered to even glance at the clock to check the time.

“Alright, fine,” I said. “Let’s head back to the medical ward.”

Evelyn’s POV

I was pleasantly surprised, and also mildly nervous, when Kane agreed to head back to the medical ward. I suppose I managed to spark his curiosity the same way mine had been.

This time around, Kane gathered more soldiers to secure the area.

“There is no room for leniency,” he snarled to the group. “These rooms are to be guarded at all times.”

With the same level of caution, we entered one of the restricted rooms. The tension returned like a heavy weight pressing on my chest. I slowly approached one of the unconscious rogues and extended my hand out.

“Be careful,” Kane hissed under his breath.

“It’s alright,” I assured him. “Just keep your eyes on the monitor.”

I rested my hand over the rogue’s upper arm. Just as before, I felt the gentle sensation of my abilities pass through the man. Kane and I stared at the monitor where we both watched the rogue’s heart rate begin to gradually drop to a stable level.

What I found truly startling was that the lower half of the monitor that was meant to record brain activity began to show slight movements.

“Oh my Goddess,” I gasped. I turned my head to glance at him.

Kane hadn’t tried to hide his smile; his eyes filled with awe. “It’s incredible.”

It felt like a momentous moment. The chance that these chaotic rogues could be potentially healed meant that we could discover the truth behind their actions and manic behavior.

“Evelyn, I want you to promise me that you won’t come to these rooms unless I’m with you,” Kane said. His tone left no room for argument.

“I promise.” “I was feeling far too giddy from our discovery to be peeved. However, for a brief second, that same unsettling sensation washed over me.

Someone was watching me.
