Chapter 135
Another wave of arousal hit me like a punch to the gut. My wolf hummed with preening approval. My knees nearly shook as my insides threatened to flutter.
My eyes dropped to his lips, where I found the inexplicable urge to close the space between us and kiss him.
Kane dropped his hand from my arm and drew it through his hair. “I mean, hell, without you, the contract would become null and void.”
My stomach flipped as a not-so-subtle pain stabbed me in the chest. “O-Oh,” I croaked.
“Yeah, not to mention that the Alpha King would have my head. I could easily kiss my battle plans goodbye,” he
added.
Holy shit… How stupid could I possibly be? Whatever soft warmth that had been fluttering within me hardened to stone and crumbled to dust. Within seconds, he’d taken my feelings and diminished them to nothing.
Of course, I was a damn fool for even thinking that Kane would be doing any of this because he truly cared for me. No. It’s all for the contract.
His precious plans to go to war against the rogue wolves. That was always where his true ambitions lay.
It felt like a harsh slap to the face. A rude awakening.
I quickly dropped my gaze before he could see the tears that were threatening to blur my vision. “Right,” I confirmed stiffly. “Like I said, I’m going to head back to the room.”
Without another wasted word, I left. Although my intentions were to head back to the bedroom to place the necklace back in its box, I hadn’t realized how badly it needed to be cleaned. I took a short detour toward the washroom.
“Luna,” one of the maids greeted me with a soft smile. “Can I help you clean that?”
“No, thank you. I don’t mind doing it myself.”
I carefully held the chain under the tap, letting the water wash away most of the blood and dirt.
“It’s horrible what Bianca tried to do,” the maid commented before slipping out of the room before I could even question her.
It was the first time that anyone, beyond my own friend group, spoke poorly about Bianca. I could scarcely believe that word had already gotten around the pack that quickly.
I suppose I should take my wins where I can, I thought.
No matter, I continued to clean my mother’s necklace while fighting off the awful feeling that seeped into my gut. I let out a tremulous breath.
“Evie?” I didn’t have to turn my head to know that it was Alexander who came up beside me..
“Hey,” I said quietly, not wanting to reveal how I was really feeling.
“I’d been wanting to catch up with you ever since this past weekend,” he said. “I wanted to ask you how your trip to Cheryl’s was.”
“Oh, it was amazing,” I responded with an honest smile. “It was so great seeing everyone again and catching up. Unfortunately, it had to be cut short.”

“Yes,
I heard, Goddamn rogue attacks,” he said with a sigh. “And on top of it all, word has been quickly flooding around about what Bianca had tried to do.”
I placed the necklace down and cautiously turned to meet Alexander’s gaze. The last thing I needed was for him to see how horrible I was feeling. And to think, it didn’t have anything to do with Bianca…
“Josie is the one who ended up getting hurt—”
Alexander wrapped his arms around me and held me close to his chest. He rested his chin on top of my head while I gradually melted against him.
“It was a horrible thing regardless,” he noted. “I’m glad that that other girl is alright. But the thought that it could have been you is enough to tear my heart in half.”
Well… If I wasn’t upset before, then I certainly was at that moment. This time, I allowed the tears to block my vision and even fall. As Alexander held me, all I could think about was how badly I wished it were Kane.
