Chapter 159

Kane’s POV

“…Kane.”

I felt Evelyn grow stiff in my arms. All the color had drained from her face. Before I could properly react,

it was far too late.

It sounded as though an explosion had occurred. But I knew that wasn’t what happened. Following the harsh noise of shattered glass and broken wood, there was a distinctive snarling that echoed off the walls of the banquet hall.

As soon as I glanced over my head, I was face-to-face with another feral rogue in their half-wolf form. Its eyes glowed a deep shade of infected yellow while its elongated teeth bit at the air around it.

Various shouts and terrified screams filled the room. Other alphas were shouting out for their lunas to either hide or run. I felt the sudden force of Evelyn’s arm wrap around my waist, pulling me back from getting potentially clawed.

“We have to get out of here!” someone yelled out.

I quickly reached for my phone in my jacket pocket and dialed Henri. “Feral rogues are attacking the banquet hall,” I shouted into the speaker. “Send at least fifty soldiers here, now!!”

“Kane!” Evelyn cried out.

My Gods, there were too many to be handled on our own. A majority of the other alphas shifted and stood their ground. Some of them had snatched up their wives and tried bringing them to a safer space- not sure one existed at a time like this.

However, my own wolf was giving off the same protective instincts that I couldn’t ignore. I quickly snagged Evelyn by her waist and hauled her over my shoulder like a manic caveman. Evelyn gasped and stammered.

“Kane, wh-what are you-”

“I need you to get you someplace safe until backup arrives,” I growled.

She huffed. “Oh, come on!” she argued. “After all of our training sessions, you still don’t think that I can’t handle a rogue?”

Now was not the time for an argument. “No. You can’t. They’re not like other wolves, Evelyn. They’re feral! You know this!”

“Goddamnit, Kane! Put me down!”

I briskly ignored her until I came upon a narrow framed door. I momentarily placed Evelyn down and yanked the door open. I glanced around to find a bunch of brooms, mops, and other cleaning supplies.

“Get in.”

“Are you kidding me?” she hissed. “You’re not putting me in a goddamn utility closet!”

“This is ridiculous! Kane, you need to let me help,” she implored.

“No.”

“Yes!”

My patience was wearing far too thin as it was. “You’re not prepared to take on a feral rogue. Evelyn, see reason. Your wolf is still developing.”

She rolled her eyes and scoffed. “I can assure you that I’m fully capable of holding my own against a feral rogue.”

The corners of my eyes twitched. “You haven’t even had the chance to fight off against a regular one. What the fuck makes you think you can handle a feral wolf?!”

Evelyn stood her ground and narrowed her eyes with fierce determination. Just as she was about to come back with some sort of countering response, another wave of horrible screams broke out.

I cursed under my breath. “Stay here,” I ordered. I felt myself begin to shift. “I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

I turned on my heels and rushed back to the main hall, where a group of feral wolves was mindlessly tearing the room apart. Both blood and broken shards of glass littered the floor. The only bright side was that it didn’t seem like anyone was truly injured.

From what I could tell, only a few alphas suffered some minor injuries, but nothing too fatal. Unfortunately, the moment my presence became known in the room, every feral wolf turned in my

direction.

Shit.

Acting as one collective mind, they began to circle me as though I were their prey. There was no telling when Henri was going to arrive with the backup we needed. But in the meantime, I refused to do nothing.

I barred my claws, readying to defend myself. Just as the first feral rogue attempted to lunge for me, I caught something moving out of the corner of my vision. It was fast, strong, and packed a mean punch.

Evelyn.

The world around me felt like it slowed long enough for me to witness the sheer insanity of her determination. Still in her dress, she clenched her hand into a solid fist and struck the rogue right across the jaw, sending the beast back several feet.

What the fuck was she thinking?!

Her eyes glowed an ethereal shade of silver while her nails grew several inches. The rogue she’d struck let out a terrible sound before scrabbling to its feet. It used its large frame and advanced speed against

her.

I let out a strangled growl as I watched the rogue jump on top of her and pin her to the floor. With two rogues on either side of me, my chances of reaching her were slim.

“Evelyn!!”

I anticipated the worst. My heart was seconds away from being torn in half, firmly believing that I was going to lose her. However, the next sound that echoed off the walls was not a woman’s scream or cry for help.

A guttural, broken howl of an animal tore through the air. Everyone froze and turned their attention to the unfathomable scene before them.

Still gripping a large shard of glass in her hand, Evelyn had taken the sharpest end of the broken window pane and driven it straight into the rogue’s neck. She refused to move while the feral wolf tried to dislodge the glass.

Within seconds, the massive creature stopped moving entirely before collapsing on top of Evelyn in a lifeless heap. Evelyn let out a disgruntled groan while trying to push the body off her.

As soon as I attempted to move, another feral rogue tried to intervene. This time, I acted without an ounce of hesitation. I slashed my hands through the air, clawing at whatever part of them I could reach.

In the distance, I began to hear the sound of dozens of footsteps trampling into the building. I spotted Henri along with a large group of soldiers ready to take down the remaining rogues.

“Divide into two groups!” I shouted out. “The first group-take care of the rogues. Second, find any remaining guests and make sure they receive medical attention if need be!”

As soon as I didn’t have to worry about dealing with the feral rogues around me, I immediately rushed

over to help Evelyn.

I pushed the dead weight off of her and briefly checked to make sure she hadn’t sustained any severe injuries. Her breathing was a bit erratic, and her dress was beyond saving. Both her face and hands were stained with blood.

I scooped her off the floor and carried her out of the banquet hall. “Henri, inform me when it’s been taken

care of,” I said.

He curtly nodded and returned to the task at hand.

When we made it outside, I was glad to at least see that none of the cars had been vandalized or destroyed. Evelyn’s heartbeat was still slightly frantic. I carefully got the two of us into the back seat and directed the driver to take us back to the house.

“I told you I could hold my own,” she said weakly.

The corner of my mouth pulled into a prideful smile as I placed a chaste kiss on the side of her head. “I won’t ever doubt you again.”
