Evelyn’s POV
Alice and I turn to the doorway, just in time to see Kane walk through. He looks put together, dashing in a suit as he takes in the room around him, a furrow slowly meeting his brow. However, before he can say anything, Bianca is racing into his arms.
“Kane, I’m so glad you’re here,” she tells him, tears gathering in her eyes. She holds him tight around the middle, though Kane’s arms remain at his sides.
“I was trying to help Evelyn prepare for the upcoming Luna ceremony, but she’s refusing to cooperate,” she goes on, sniffling. ” I was being kind, but she kept shoving or scolding me any time I tried to offer advice!”
“She’s right,” Alice says coldly. “Evelyn was being completely rude and ungrateful.” She shakes her head as she glances at me. “A Luna like her will only bring us ridicule and hurt our pack image.”
My features harden as I hold her stare, but I say nothing in response. Fine – let them spurt lies about me. It will only help my chances in earning Kane’s rejection.
“Punish her, Kane!” Bianca shouts then. “She needs to answer for this!”
My eyes snap to Bianca, but soon shift away from the blonde as I realize Kane is staring at me. Once again, his features are plain, unreadable. He shocks me as he appears to ignore Bianca’s efforts, slipping out of her arms as he addresses me instead.
“What happened?” he asks, causing my heart to skip a beat. Is he really asking…me?
I swallow, trying not to show how this affects me.
“It’s true – Bianca offered to help me with my Luna lessons,” I tell him. “But she used it as an excuse to bully me as she saw fit.” I pause, looking past Kane to Bianca who now glowers at me.
“She insisted I put on this dress, gave me shoes that are too small,” I state, gesturing down to myself. “Then she chose to correct’ me by using me as her own punching bag. She even called your Omega in here to try and hurt me too.”
I point over to Heather who has also been glaring at me. When she notices Kane’s attention, she tries to smooth out her face.
“I wasn’t going to stand by and accept their abuse, so I defended myself,” I state, lifting my chin. “I won’t apologize for that.”
As I finish, I can see Bianca’s cheeks are stained red. She shakes her head, flustered by my words.
“That’s not true!” she declares.
“She’s lying,” Kane’s mother joins in. “Really, Kane. This whole thing is ridiculous.”
As much as I’d like to laugh or continue to stick up for myself, I chose to let their words roll off of me. Instead, I hold Kane’s gaze as he studies me, seeming to also ignore Bianca and his mother.
“Well,” I begin. “As you can see, I am clearly unfit to be Luna, We might as well put everyone out of their misery and divorce. Then we’ll all be free of each other.”
Bianca nods at this, eager for Kane to accept my offer. His mother also seems to approve as she stands tall, her hands clasped in front of her as she awaits Kane’s agreement. However, we’re all quickly disappointed.
“No,” Kane states.
“What!?” Bianca yells, but still he ignores her and his disapproving mother as he steps toward me.
“Divorce is off the table,” he insists, standing over me. “It’s impossible.”
I scowl at him, staring into his green eyes as he considers me.
“Impossible?” I ask. “Don’t tell me you’re refusing to divorce me because you’ve fallen in love with me.”

Chapter 10
It’s a jab, an impulse that I couldn’t help but follow. It seems to hit its mark too as Kane’s nostrils flare in response.
“Don’t be delusional,” he says tightly, his annoyance pleasing me.

“Sir,” a maid states from the doorway, causing us all to turn. “The designer for Evelyn’s gown has arrived. Shall I send him in?”
Kane turns back to me, studying my face as he pauses. I silently answer him by lifting a brow.
“Send him to Evelyn’s room,” he orders the maid. “We’ll both meet him there in a moment.”
“Both of us?” I blurt incredulously as the maid nods and slips away.
