Chapter 197

I tried to keep my nerves under control, but the more I thought about it, the more anxious I became.

“Oh, Gods. Diana, if that’s the case… That could mean that this mad scientist we’re after has found a way to genetically mutate a new plant species. What if he’s creating his own personal supply of the stuff?”

What frightened me the most was that I had no idea what this Angel Thorn would essentially do to the body.

“I have to read more of that journal,” I commented.

Suddenly, the two of us were rejoined by Bianca. She had a clipboard in her hand and a white medical coat wrapped around her.

She gave me a pointed look while still carrying that same-old tone of authority.

“So, what? Do you just not work anymore? Or, wait, let me guess. Your special, little ability has finally given out on you, so you’ve become useless,” she remarked bluntly.

“For your information, Evelyn is in the midst of recovering,” Diana defended.

Bianca’s voice was laced with doubt. “Oh, really?”

“Yes, you see, while you were exiled to the far end of the property, you completely missed the fact that Kane had declared war on the rogues,” I said.

Her eyes grew wide.

“It’s true,” Diana chimed in. “You missed the event entirely. Both Kane and Evelyn made history in their victory over the rogues. Not only that, but Evelyn saved Kane from getting torn to pieces.”

A deep blush spread across my face. Once more, I had not committed those actions in order to receive praise. Kane’s life was on the line, and I needed to act fast.

Bianca’s face was beat red from anger and incredulity. “I don’t believe you,” she hissed. “Kane would never keep something that important from me!”

The two of us watched Bianca storm out of the medical ward, most likely with the intention of heading to

Kane’s office.

Oddly enough, I didn’t feel an ounce of worry or insecurity about the two of them being alone together. In these last several weeks, Kane and I have grown so much closer that there wasn’t anything that could easily get between us.

Especially someone as blindingly desperate as Bianca.

As the afternoon rolled around, I took up Diana’s offer to join her and the rest of the team for lunch in the dining hall. When the pair of us made it over to one of the tables, I couldn’t help but notice Bianca sitting by herself.

Her expression was a pained mixture of disbelief and devastation. It made me wonder if she did manage to speak with Kane and what he may have told her.

I chose not to pay her any mind. However, the real subject of intrigue occurred when Josie came into the dining hall. She quickly spotted Diana and me and waved over to us. But Bianca was quick to throw out her opinion.

“Josie? What the hell are you doing?” she asked harshly. “Since when do you sit with them?

Josie grew stiff. “Since they granted me the opportunity to start over and we became real friends,” she responded thickly.

Bianca scoffed. “Real friends? You can’t be serious-”

“I’m completely serious. You know Bianca, I gained nothing from trailing behind you for all those years. You roped me into your endless schemes and always found a way to blame it on someone else when things backfired. Well, I’m done.”

Bianca’s lips parted. “Josie…”

“Look at these scars on my face. The only reason why they healed so well is because of Evelyn,” she claimed. “But you’re the reason why I got them in the first place.”

Bianca stood up from her table and rushed out of the dining hall. There was no mistaking the tears I spotted in her eyes.

Serves her right.
