Chapter 23
“What the fuck were trying to do!? Completely dismantle our pack!?” he barks in my face.
“I was trying to reject you!” I say, hitting him in the chest. “None of this would have ever happened if you’d just accept my offer in the first place!”
As I go to hit him again, Kane grabs my hand, holding it tightly to his chest. I can feel the way his heart is pounding, but then we’re both frozen, both of our control slipping through our fingers.
Kane’s eyes glow yellow as his wolf comes over him as my own vision fills with purple.
A voice fills my head, one I’ve never heard but am able to easily place.
His wolf. It’s Kane’s wolf.
He speaks slowly, warmly and it occurs to me that his words are intended for my own wolf.
What is going on? I can sense you, but you’re so far away, he asks.
I’m healing, my wolf whispers back. She offers nothing more, but I can sense the wheels turning in Kane’s wolf’s head.
Her wolf is in a crucial recovery phase, he states. If you reject one another now it could affect her wolf’s healing. Even worsen it.
This news causes me to hesitate, my protective nature over my wolf matching his own. If Kane and I reject each other now then I dare to lose all the progress I’ve made. I dare to lose my wolf altogether.
The best thing you can do is stay in the pack for now, Kane’s wolf states. If you do, then I know it will persuade Kane to treat you better.
My wolf and I pause together now, both of us reaching out to one another though we say nothing. Finally, my wolf whispers a reluctant reply.
Okay.
Immediately, Kane’s wolf disappears, allowing Kane to regain consciousness as he blinks the yellow from his eyes. My purple gradually disappears as well.
Back in control, Kane huffs out a breath as he stares down at me.
“For the next few days, you need to stay in here,” he orders. “You will go nowhere else.”
There he goes, bossing me around again. Swiftly, he turns away and I scowl at the back of his head as he goes to the door. Only, he pauses before he lefts himself out, glancing back at me.
“Oh, and as for rejecting me,” he starts. “That’s out of the question.”
Smoothly, he leaves my room, slamming the door behind him. Frustrated, I pull off one of my heels and throw it at the door, watching as a small chip is taken out of the wood.

I huff as I mentally curse him, even though I know I should be grateful he didn’t accept my rejection As much as I don’t want to be stuck with him, it appears that I need him in order to ensure my wolf’s safety
Taking off my other shoe, I shuffle in my bubble of skirts to my bed and throw myself on top of it. I hate accepting Kane’s stupid orders, but I have no desire to leave my room anyway. I’ve had enough of people for one night.
As if to spite me, my phone begins to ring from my side table and I reach over to retrieve it.
“Hello?” I answer.
“How dare you, you worthless little brat!” my father’s voice screams into my ear. “What on Earth were you trying to do? You better apologize to Kane and clear things up with the public before this manages to get anymore out of hand!”
I close my eyes, breathing slowly as my father’s familiar insults swirl around me. When he finally takes a moment to catch some air, I sigh loudly into the phone.
“I will not be a mere tool for childbirth,” I tell him flatly. “Just accept the fact that a divorce or rejection is
inevitable, father.”
“Inevitable!?” he exclaims.
“You’d better make sure that’s not true. Or else you can kiss your mother’s inheritance goodbye.”
