Chapter 264

The older woman’s lips pulled into an unsavory sneer. “You may think that you’ve gotten me out of this house, but you haven’t heard the last from me.”

“Oh, I’m certain that you’re going to do everything in your power to make me look terrible,” I said. “But I truly wonder, when it all comes down to the ink in the tabloids, who do you think the general public will believe? A stuck-up, washed-out, middle-aged woman who couldn’t keep a pack sustainable, or the wife of the most infamous Alpha in the region who happens to be close friends with the Alpha king himself?”

I watched the blood simmer in my stepmother’s face as her own kids stood in complete shock behind

her.

All I could do was smile in return. “Now, get the hell out of my house.”

‘And don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out!!’

Kane’s POV

I wasn’t prepared for what life without Evelyn would be like. Things were quieter in the evenings, more so

than before.

Part of me thought that I would be able to handle it that same way when Evelyn had gone on her girls’ trip. But this was entirely different. At least, back then, I knew that there would come a time in which she

would return.

This new endeavor she took on held no firm time limit, leaving me to endure this unsettling coldness in my bones. It was no better than the icy sensation I felt when I was in bed. Alone.

Without Evelyn, I felt as though I was missing something. I wished she’d given me the chance to go with her. Was she even okay? Had her family given her any troubles? What about her developing Alpha?

I remained behind my desk, treating it like a shield from the outside world. Was it cowardice? Probably.

As Evelyn’s mate and husband, it was right to worry. I glanced at the pile of blank letterhead on the corner of my desk and silently contemplated. Should I write to her?

The chances of her actually taking one of my calls were slim since neither one of us knew each other’s schedules. Yet, at the same time, I didn’t want to feel like a bother.

The door suddenly flew open. In came Olivia with what I could only assume was the latest gossip column of her favorite reporter.

“Is there a real reason as to why you’ve decided to barge into my office?” I questioned sharply.

I should have locked the door, I thought.

A smug smile pulled at the corner of her mouth. Olivia placed down the magazine issue on the desk in front of me. She pointed to the exact section of the page that was the sole purpose of her sudden intrusion.

“I thought you should take a look at this,” she stated with confidence. My eyes were instantly drawn to the picture at the top of the article.

It was Evelyn. The angle in which the picture was taken made her look incredibly fierce. One might even say ‘dangerous.’

I couldn’t keep myself from smiling at the sight. “That’s a great picture of her.”

Oivia was quick to scoff. “Would you read the damn title?”

‘Daughter Evicts Family From Home!’

My brows rose. Holy shit. She did it.

Can you believe that she would do something like that?” Olivia asked.

“That’s enough Olivia,” I told her.

“I’m just saying, everyone is so quick to fawn over her, and yet she does something as heartless as this?”

“You have no idea of the shit those people put her through! Since when are you someone who passes judgment on others?” I asked. “For Gods’ sake, I don’t think I’ve ever been more proud of her for what she managed to do.”

And with that, Olivia fell silent.
