Chapter 36

Knowing he had to reply to his king, Kane cleared his throat, nodding.

“It appears she might be,” he murmured.

Now that everything has calmed down, the scene is cleared, and I’ve finished my rounds – I decide to take a walk through the hospital garden for a little bit of peace. It’s quiet here – a perfect escape.

I breathe in the different flowers and the fresh moisture in the air as I pass down the small path of the garden. However, as I get deeper into the foliage, I soon realize I’m not alone.

“Alexander?”

He’s sitting on one of the stone benches and he lifts his head as I call out his name.

“Oh, Evelyn,” he says, standing. “Hello.”

“What are you doing here?” I ask, coming to meet him.

“The hospital staff mentioned there was a lovely garden here,” he explained. “I wanted to see it for myself.”

I nod, smiling as I look out to the various flowers surrounding us. “It is beautiful.”

“Yes, it is,” he says, causing me to turn back to him. He stares at me, giving a soft smile.

“You were incredible back there,” he says as we both move to sit on the bench. “I had no idea you had the ability to calm those wolves.”

I offer a small laugh. “Neither did I. Not until recently. I wish I had known sooner – then maybe I could have at least used it on you.”

Alexander laughs back, raising a brow. “Are you insisting that I’m a feral wolf?”

“No,” I smile, teasing. “But I am insisting that you were an energetic kid who loved getting into trouble.”

He hums as that, nodding. “You got me there.”

Together we laugh, but soon grow quiet as we look out at the garden once more. There’s a comfortable silence between us, one that makes my heart warm and ache at the same time.

Talking and being with Alexander is so easy. For some reason, it makes my mind trail back to Kane, to the stressful weeks that we’ve been through together. The insults, the jabs.

I wonder if it would ever be easy between us – Kane and me. It seems impossible…as if it would only ever be an act. How can it be that difficult between fated mates?

“Alexander?” I ask.

“I don’t know,” I toss back. “Why would you be? It seems to me that you’re purposely keeping our ‘ husband and wife’ business vague in front of Alexander to confuse him. Or at least cause some sort of

misunderstanding.”

“Misunderstanding?” Kane presses out the word. His tone makes me feel like our already small room is somehow smaller. It fills every inch of space despite being barely above a murmur.

“What’s there to misunderstand?” he continues. “We are husband and wife, after all. So what could

Alexander be ‘confused’ about? Misled to think?”

Again, I glare at him.

“You know what I mean,” I state. “You’re acting like some territorial alphahole and being unreasonable.”

“One of us needs to keep up our act,” Kane fires back. “Especially if you’re not going to.”

“What is that supposed to mean?” I press.

But Kane sighs, shaking his head and appearing as though he doesn’t care to continue this conversation.

“Kane?” I try.

Quickly, I watch Kane’s expression turn more serious, causing my heart to stagger in my chest. I’m prepared for whatever harsh words he’s likely about to throw at me. However, he surprises me instead.

“The feral wolves,” he says, completely changing the subject. “How were you able to soothe them?”

“I…uh,” I stumble out, struggling for words. I’m not exactly sure how, but I can only assume it’s tied to my wolf and her growing strength. A gift passed down by my Silver bloodline.

However, I don’t want to meet Kane with so much uncertainty and I’m still pissed with him about everything with Alexander. So, I lift my chin at him.

“That’s none of your business,” I state, folding my arms over my chest. Kane falls quiet for a moment,

and so do I.

Slowly, his jaw begins to roll as if he has an idea on the tip of his tongue, but he needs a moment to see if he likes the taste. Finally, he seems to make up his mind.
