Chapter 40

Evelyn’s POV
I can think of dozens of things I’d rather be doing than going back to my respected pack house. Maybe even hundreds of things. And I hate that I’m a bundle of nerves in the backseat of the car as we approach the house.
I wish I could tell the driver to slow down, to maybe even pull off for a moment so I can take a few deep breaths. However, I know the sooner I’m there then the sooner I can get this whole thing over with.
I’m left taking a few deep breaths in the backseat, trying to keep my exhales silent so I don’t alert my driver. If he does notice then he doesn’t show any signs as he’s completely at ease as we officially pull
up to the house.
I murmur a “thank you” to him despite not feeling very thankful, and then I climb out of the car. My throat is dry as I walk up the remainder of the drive, allowing myself through the front door of the pack house.
One thing is for sure – I didn’t miss this place. I wish I did, but ever since my mother passed away, it hasn’t felt the same. It definitely hasn’t felt like home to me in a very long time.
That thought brings a pain in my heart, which only sinks deeper as my stepmother comes around the corner, wrinkling her nose in disgust as she notices me.
“What are you doing here?” she asks, crossing her arms.
“I-,” I begin, but I’m unable to say more as my step siblings come walking in behind her, both of them snorting and laughing as they stare at me. My mere existence is a joke to them.
“Oh, don’t tell me,” my step mother continues, clicking her tongue. “Kane finally realized how worthless you are and threw you out?”
She smirks as her words hit me, and both of my step siblings double over in laughter. They’re lost in
absolute glee.
“I’m surprised it took him so long!” my stepsister, Katya, calls out.
“He probably finally realized just how pathetic she is and sent her packing,” my stepbrother, Flynn, joins
“Maybe now Kane will actually find someone worth his while,” Katya snickers. “Unless…he’s found someone already.”
This delights Flynn, making him laugh loudly. “Oooo, Evelyn! Tell us – has Kane already replaced you? Probably wasn’t that hard.”
My jaw tightens, but I do my best not to let my features twitch under their ridicule. For once in my life, I actually wish that Kane was at my side. Just so I could prove to them that they’re wrong.
“Now, now,” my stepmother says, amusement dancing in her tone. “I’m sure Kane already has multiple
1/2
women doting on him in order to recover from dealing with her.”
Ugh,” Katya groans. “And now we have to deal with her again? That’s so unfair
I’m pressing my teeth so firmly together that I fear they may break. I begin to open my mouth, ready to defend myself. Only, my father entering the room causes my words to catch in my throat
“What’s going on?” he asks, his eyes moving around the room. When they land on me, they immediately narrow. “Why are you here?”
“Kane kicked her out,” Flynn jumps in before I can speak
“Yeah, he’s done with her so now she’s come back to live with us,” Katya says flatly.
My father’s eyes widen, anger flashing over his face as he stares at me.
“That’s not “I try, but he interrupts me.
“You worthless girl!” he yells, taking steps towards me. I can practically feel the warmth of his anger. Behind him, my stepmother and step siblings are smiling.
“I knew you couldn’t handle this! And now you’ve failed!” he continues to yell. “I thought for once you’d be good for something, but you’ve clearly proven me wrong.”
“Not to mention that she’s been using her Silver blood to bully us,” my stepmother states then, causing my eyes to flash to her in confusion.
“At the Luna ceremony, she acted like she was better than us,” she offers, sneering. “And she just threatened us, didn’t she?”
She looks at my stepsiblings and tries to get them to back up her lies.
“She wants to make us look bad and smear our names so that she can gain more power,” she states, then clicking her tongue. “And after everything we’ve done for her. It’s hurtful.”
Finally, I can’t stop the scoff that jumps from my throat, my jaw falling open.
“After what you’ve done for me?” I ask. “What have you done? Other than abuse and ridicule me?”
