Chapter 53

“Ah, if only they had been able to attend tonight’s dinner,” the King continues, “I’m sure they would have been impressed by Evelyn’s preparations.”

Kane nods as we all begin to eat our soup. “They certainly would have been,” Kane comments. “My mother and Evelyn have similar taste.”

We do?

I glance at Kane, raising a brow as I try to tell if he’s being honest. However, he only gives a small and brief smile, catching me completely off guard. My heart even jumps.

Tearing my eyes away from him, I put a smile on my own face, acting as though I’m flattered by his words.

“I don’t think Alice would have approved of the candles,” Bianca decides to chime in. “She hates the smell of vanilla. I thought Evelyn knew that.”

Our end of the table quiets, glancing in Bianca’s direction. She appears innocent as she ignores her soup, trying to make it seem like it was a harmless comment.

“Plus,” Bianca chooses to continue. “I heard from our normal kitchen staff that Evelyn stole all of the week’s ingredients to prepare for the party. Now they have to double our grocery budget for the week just to make up for it.”

She glances Kane’s, giving a pitying look. “That wasn’t very considerate.”

“That’s not true,” I state, plainly.

Bianca shrugs, her gaze clipping to me. “That’s what our cook said. You’re not calling her a liar…are you? She’s worked for Kane’s family for years.”

Again, she tries to act as though I’m being unfair, ridiculous. But I take a slow breath, knowing the best thing I can do is remain calm and collected.

“I mean, you did have to prepare everything last night, didn’t you?” Bianca asks. “Since you waited. It would make sense that you had to steal food.”

“I didn’t steal food,” I reply again, knowing exactly what Bianca is doing. She’s trying to make me look bad and point out my “flaws” for her own personal gain. However, I’m thankfully one step ahead.

“In fact,” I say, pulling out my phone from my clutch. “I have security footage to prove it – if you want to see.

Bianca pales at this and I can feel the others looking at me. The Alpha King seems to smile in approval, Alexander gives a small laugh, and Kane stares at me blankly,

“W-what?” she asks.

“Well, I had cameras installed the other day. You know, after someone came in and destroyed the room? Practically vandalized it,” I state.

Bianca’s eyes gently narrow on me.

“So I figured it would be a good idea to put up some cameras in case they tried to come back or there were any other issues,” I continue to explain. I then pause, opening up the app connected to the cameras before I find the clip I’m looking for.

I click it on, holding it out for them to see. In it, you can see Diana and her staff bringing in fresh bags of groceries.

Groceries that we clearly bought.

“We didn’t steal anything,” I state. “I didn’t steal anything.”

I can see Bianca’s cheeks begin to redden, her anger obviously coming to the surface quickly. I’m not sure what she’s going to say about being beaten at her own game, but I’m prepared for anything. Only, she’s not able to say anything as Kane interjects.

“Bianca was just looking out for the kitchen staff,” he tries, firm even as he smooths things over. “This is all just a misunderstanding.”

A misunderstanding? I stare at the side of his face, once again trying as hard as I can not to show my utter annoyance. This was definitely not a big misunderstanding and he knows that.

However, he still chose to speak up for Bianca, explain and defend her standpoint. It’s not lost on me that he didn’t say anything in my favor, which causes me to tear my gaze away.

Once more, Kane has proven how inconsistent he is. My contentment over his earlier compliments is immediately forgotten.

Any budding goodwill I had started to feel for Kane vanishes once again.
