Chapter 6

Evelyn’s POV

“Why?” I press out the word, shaking my head.

I don’t understand why he would deny my proposal when we so clearly despise one another. I’m giving him an out, and yet he refuses to take it?

Kane’s first reply is an exaggerated sigh, both his impatience and annoyance clear.

“Your wolf is weak, Evelyn,” he says, the way he uses my name makes me swallow. “You’re lucky to be married to me – what other wolf would want you? Let alone a powerful wolf?”

A “powerful wolf” like him, he means. The way he throws the word at me makes me narrow my eyes.

“What more could you want?” he mocks.

“I never wanted to marry you in the first place!” I counter. “What I want is to not be forced into a marriage with someone who thrives off humiliating me. The only reason I had to marry you in the first place is because of my mother’s pack – not because I care about your power.”

Throwing his words back in his face is elating, especially as I see the way Kane’s jaw tightens at my words.

“This marriage was arranged by the Alpha King,” Kane states, his words clipped as frustration replaces his arrogance. “If we divorce only a few days after getting married then we’ll have to answer to him.”

The thought of standing before the Alpha King nearly sends a shiver down my spine. Kane’s right – as this whole marriage was the King’s doing, we’d have to answer to him – an impossible task. No one answers to the King and manages to walk away unscathed.

Or walk away at all.

But still, I can’t keep going on like this. I’m tired of being their punching bag, a target for them to point and laugh at. There has to be something we can do.

“Kane, please,” I begin, hating using that word toward this cruel wolf. “We can’t keep

“Enough,” Kane firmly interrupts me. He takes a step toward me, shaking his head. “Give it a rest, little wolf.”

His degrading pet name for me causes me to scowl at him, which makes him laugh.

“Drop the act,” he insists. “You and I both know that you don’t actually want to end this marriage or reject our bond.”

“What!?” The word jumps breathlessly from my mouth. Has he completely lost his mind?

Kane responds by bringing his hand to my face, firmly gripping my chin to keep my gaze locked on his.

“You’re just playing hard to get to gain my attention,” he states, his voice lowering.

“Is that what you really think?” I ask, my voice like venom. Still, he holds my chin as his face moves closer to my own.

Despite my features remaining unbothered and firm, my heart betrays me as it begins to race at Kane’s sudden nearness. It’s clear he can sense it as a knowing smile lifts a corner of his lips. I wish I could smack it right off his face.

But I don’t move an inch as he continues to play with me, coming another inch closer so I can feel his breath skim my lips with his next words.

“You can give up hope, little wolf,” he states coldly. “You’re going to spend the rest of your life as my wife – always by my side.”

Kane pushes my chin to the side as he releases me, walking away and returning to Bianca. She’s still whining as he picks her up from the ground and carries her off toward his awaiting SUV. However, she makes sure to shoot me a smirk over Kane’s

shoulder as the rest of his men follow them.

Meanwhile, I stay behind – the wife who will have to grin and bear my husband flaunting his lovers in front of me for the rest of our lives, apparently. 1

Or so he thinks. My anger continues to boil as I stand alone, replaying Kane’s words in my head, my chin still warm from where he held me. I practically shake as I think of his arrogance, the way he played dictator over my life. Does he really expect me to just sit by and accept the fate that he wants for me?

Yes, I answer for myself. Because he thinks I’m weak. He thinks I need him.

The thought is so infuriating that I practically want to laugh in hysterics.

If he really thinks I need him, if he won’t agree to a rejection then fine.

I’ll just make him regret it. I’ll make him wish he’d taken my first offer by making his life a living hell until he agrees to divorce

After all, he’s already making my life a nightmare, so it’s just playing fair, right?
