Evelyn’s POV

Dr. Borsheim writes me a short list of his suggestions. The list includes working out and bettering my physical strength, overcoming moral challenges, and finding opportunities where I can show leadership.
His list makes sense. All of these attributes are what make a strong and worthy Luna, so by developing my own skills and strength, hopefully it will better my wolf too.
I thank Dr. Borsheim for his time and the list, already eager to get to work. I rush back to the pack house, deciding to focus on the doctor’s first suggestion as it’s the one currently within my control.
I stop at my room to change into workout clothes and throw my hair up into a ponytail. I didn’t realize how late it is already – helping the feral wolves took quite a while – but I’m thankful that it’s nearly midnight. It makes it so the house is fairly quiet and I don’t risk running into anyone.
As I make it to the house gym, I’m relieved to find it empty and at my disposal. I stretch as I glance around at all of the equipment, trying to decide where I’d like to begin. It has been awhile since I’ve worked out – maybe even since my mother passed.
I ignore the sting that comes with that thought, making sure my limbs feel loose as I decide to warm up on a treadmill. I used to love running when I was a teenager, but I prefer to do it outside. Still, I’ll take what I can get.
After getting in a twenty minute jog, I move over to weights next. I don’t push myself too hard, not wanting to get hurt. However, I focus on my arms and shoulders.
As I finish another set, I place the weights off to the side, panting slightly as the door opens. Swiftly, I glance behind him, dread running down my spine as I anticipate someone else coming in. Only, the sensation is soon replaced by relief and surprise as I note who walks in.
“Alexander?” I ask.
“Oh, Evie,” my old friend replies. “I didn’t know you were in here. I hope I’m not intruding.”
“Of course not,” I insist. “The gym is open to everyone. But I didn’t know you were still here! I thought you went back with your father.”
“Ah, yes,” Alexander replies. “It’s all a matter of business. My father had other things to attend to, though, so he asked me to stay in his place.”
“Right,” I draw out with a nod. I raise a brow. “Are you sure he didn’t ask you to stay longer so you could keep spying on me?”
I’m teasing, but it does suddenly occur to me that I did just move out of Kane’s room. That might look a little suspicious to Alexander if he did stay for the means of spying.
No, it’s fine, I remind myself that I don’t care. If I need to, I’ll just figure out an excuse.
“Being able to see more of you is a perk,” Alexander replies fondly. “But I promise I’m not spying. Scout’s honor.”
I laugh as he holds up his hand, as if making a legitimate vow to me.
“I’ll take your word for it,” I say back, reassuring him.
Again, we share a smile. Alexander’s eyes take me in, giving me a quick up-and-down. It’s then that I become exceedingly aware of how disgusting I probably look.

“Oh, Goddess. I’m a mess,” I comment with a laugh, gesturing down at myself. “I’ve been sweating like a pig. I’m sure all my concealer has melted off so you can see my dark circles.”
“Dark circles?” he questions. “Not getting enough sleep?”
“Not really,” I say with a breathy laugh. “I’m still just…” I try to pick my words carefully, knowing I have to tread lightly.
“I’m still new to my role here, and getting settled is…difficult,” I explain, knowing that’s an understatement. “ And Kane -”
