Chapter 73

Kane’s POV

“1…I don’t know,” Bianca bubbles out. “I didn’t -”

Despite Bianca’s efforts, there’s no denying what she’s done. It makes sense now – the way she’d invited the whole damn town or how she’d been eager to see the performance. She’d expected it to crash and burn because she’d planned for it to.

I sigh. For fuck’s sake.

I stand then, quickly drawing everyone’s attention as I calm the commotion within the room.

“This is all just a misunderstanding,” I insist, trying to smooth it over. “It’s late. You should all head home. As Evelyn said – thank you all for coming and supporting our local youth. We appreciate you all.”

My words seem to do the trick as the crowd is in better spirits as they begin to stand and trickle out of the room. Meanwhile, I glance over at Bianca who looks at me with gratitude and innocence. I don’t react, my gaze instead moving to look at Evelyn.

She stares back at me, her brows pulled together as if trying to work something out. However, the little girl at her side tugs at her hand, gaining Evelyn’s attention as her eyes turn away.

Once more, I sigh.

“You should go,” I tell Bianca.

“But, Kane, I didn’t do anything. I bet Evelyn told those kids to say all of that about me!” Bianca insists desperately. “All because – ”

“Bianca,” I cut her off, saying her name in warning. “Go.”

Snapping her mouth shut, Bianca abruptly stands from her seat and makes her way out of the room. I watch her for a moment but then shake my head as I walk up onto the stage.

The group of children are still there, talking animatedly as they comment on how well they did. However, as they notice my presence, they grow silent and begin to blink up at me in awe.

I offer a smile.”You all did very well,” I tell them. “You should be proud of yourselves.”

Delight comes over their faces as they happily nod. “Thank you, Alpha Kane!”

My eyes then slide over to Evelyn, noting the little girl who is still glued to her side. I give her a warm smile and she shyly waves. I then nod at Evelyn.

“That was very impressive,” I tell her.

“Thank you…,” Evelyn says, indifferent. She then looks at the kids, smiling. “Why don’t you all run along and find your families? I’m sure they want to give you all a big hug.”

Instantly excited, the kids scramble off the stage, quick to go off and find their parents. Within moments, Evelyn and I are left behind, standing alone together on the stage.

“I meant what I said,” I begin again, able to talk freely now that the kids are gone. “You did well. You exceeded everyone’s expectations, especially mine.”

“I didn’t expect so many people to come,” Evelyn says, looking out at the empty seats now. “But I guess I have

Bianca to thank for that…I’m sure she expected the show to go a lot differently.”

I roll my jaw, taking in Evelyn’s statement. She doesn’t sound angry or bitter. Instead, her tone is plain as she simply offers the comment.

“I’m not surprised she tried to bribe the kids,” she says then.

“Evelyn, she was just – ”

“Stop,” Evelyn says, her eyes moving to me. “You don’t need to make up excuses. You already covered for her. It’s fine.”

My brow furrows as I take in her words, but I say nothing in response. Instead, my features continue to harden, annoyance burning in my chest as I nod.

“I should go,” I state. I begin to turn, but stop as I stare pointedly back at her. “I hope you haven’t forgotten about the feral wolves at the hospital. That’s part of your duties and just as important. Make sure you see them.”

Evelyn blinks at me, her lips pressing into a firm line as she likely notes my tense tone. However, I then turn away, leaving her behind.

Evelyn’s POV

Goddess. I sigh as I watch Kane leave the room, feeling as if I just been spun in circles.

I’m so pleased that the performance went well, allowing me to beat Bianca at her own game. Seeing her angry reaction was all the satisfaction I needed, but witnessing how much everyone enjoyed the show was a nice perk

too.

I hadn’t expected the children to call out Bianca like that, and clearly she hadn’t either. That’s probably why she’d been so bold to sit in the front row. But it didn’t matter that the kids exposed her, Kane had swept right in to clean up her mess.

Just like how he’d been ready to give me excuses for Bianca’s actions, trying to protect her once again. But I couldn’t listen to it all again. It was all such bullshit – even if he wasn’t willing to admit it.
