Chapter 88

Evelyn’s POV

“I’ll get her cleaned up.”

I glance over and see Diana quickly walking up, her arm sliding around me.

“Mind if I steal her away, Alpha?” Diana asks Kane. “I’ll help with the stain and then get her right back to you.”

Kane seems slightly tense as he registers Diana’s words but he then nods. “That would be great. Thank you.”

Diana happily nods and I give a lame wave as she escorts me away. Meanwhile, Bianca glares, not pleased that she wasn’t able to send me home for the night.

“I saw the whole thing,” Diana states when we’re out of earshot. “That woman is a nightmare.”

I gently snort. “Oh, if you only knew.”

As promised, Diana brings me to the nurses’ tent and begins to help me soak up some of the wine. She then gives me a sweater of hers to pull over my dress, which covers most of the damage.

“Thank you, Diana,” I say with a sigh.

“No worries,” she says, smiling. “What are friends for?”

This makes me smile too, stupidly happy to genuinely have a friend here. However, my attention is then turned as I notice another friend walking up – an old friend.

“Alexander,” I state fondly. “I didn’t know you were coming.

The man approaches, offering his own subtle smile. “Wouldn’t miss it for the world, Evie,” he insists. “But I’ve also come with a surprise.”

He then steps to the side, gesturing toward three women who are also walking with him. As I take in each of their faces, my eyes grow wide.

“Oh my Goddess!” I begin, jumping up from my seat as I give each woman a hug. “Brooke, Angie, and Cheryl! What are you doing here!?”

I haven’t seen them in so long- they’re my mother’s old friends. It’s such an amazing surprise.

“Alexander called us and told us about the festival,” Angie informs me warmly.

“He asked if we’d like to join him and see you, so of course we said yes,” Cheryl jumps in.

“It’s so nice to see you all,” I tell them truthfully, trying to keep tears from entering my eyes.

“You too, sweetheart,” Brooke says with a gentle smile. “We also wanted to invite you to our own upcoming gathering. It will be about two weeks from now – other friends of your mother will be there.”

Instantly, I nod. “Of course, I would love to come.”

“Perhaps I could accompany you,” Alexander states, hopeful. “You know, for old times sake?”

I open my mouth to reply, but Cheryl quickly clicks her tongue. “Oh, Alexander. Don’t be silly. We’d love it if your mate could join you, Evelyn. We want to meet him and spend time with you two.”

Again, I nod, this time a little less certain. Still, I mentally make it my mission to get Kane to agree to the event. I

miss my mother’s friends and would love to go see them.

“Alright, well we should go,” Angie says then. “We’re all starving and Alexander promised to treat us.”

“We love you, Evie,” Brooke says, giving my hand a squeeze. “We hope to see you soon.”

I give each woman another hug as we finish our goodbyes, and then Alexander and I share a smile as they all walk away. I even mouth a “thank you” to him, elated by the brief reunion.

“Wow,” the words fall from my lips as Diana is still at my side. “Thank you for your help, Diana. I need to go find Kane.”

I want to tell him about the event immediately.

Díana seems to understand and we quickly say a kind goodbye. Then I’m off toward the town square, pulling out my phone as I walk.

I can’t believe my mother’s friends really came to see me. It was so I expected but a relief to be connected with them once again. I lost contact with them when my mother died, which was likely intended by my father, no doubt.

As I pull up my texts, ready to send a message to Kane asking where he is, I’m distracted as I begin to hear a strange noise.

It’s like a high pitched ringing, a whining of some sort.

I glance up, trying to figure out where it’s coming from. Only, I’m too late.

A loud boom echoes across the town square as a blast erupts – sending heat, flames and debris in every direction.

And it sends me flying through the air until I crash into the ground. As my head collides with the pavement, the whole world goes dark.

Kane’s POV

People frantically begin to scatter as smoke and flames suddenly arise from the town square. The explosion was small, but it still sends panic into the crowds as people holler and scream. Immediately, I abandon the conversation I’d been having as I address the chaos.

I instantly locate multiple members of my circle, signaling to the crowds. “Get these people out of here!” I order. “ And make sure the area stays clear!”

The rest of you, I say through my mindlink, capturing the attention of my other pack members. Make sure the area is surrounded. Don’t let the wolves responsible for this get away.

Fuck. This has to be the work of the rogues, There’s no doubt in my mind that they’re the ones responsible for pulling this shit. We’ll need to be fast if we plan on catching them.

My circle seems to get the message as they’re quick to take on their roles. I begin to search the crowd, looking to catch the light hair of someone specific. However, Henri is then by my side, bumping into my shoulder.

I glance his way, giving a nod before we both are off, sprinting toward the town square where the warmth from the explosion is still present. We can see small collections of fires, flames licking up toward the sky and filling the square with smoke.

Only, my attention only stays there for a moment as I notice a collection of people standing at the edge of the smoke, worry etched onto all of their features.

“Kane!” one of them yells as I get closer, and I realize that it’s Diana. The fear on her face and in her voice is

unmistakable, causing my chest to tighten.

“What’s going on?” I ask as Henri and I run up to them. Beside her, Alexander stands along with three middle- aged women I don’t recognize.

“It’s Evelyn,” Diana begins, her voice catching as tears begin to stream into her eyes.

As her words hit me, my own eyes widen and nostrils flare as I instantly understand what she’s alluding to.

“I think she’s in there,” Diana says, officially crying now as she points to the smoke and wreckage. “She went to go find you and I saw her heading that way. Then the explosion went off.”
