Chapter 90
Slowly, my eyes peel open and I blink up at the white-tiled ceiling that meets crisp white walls. I cough once, roll my head to the side as I feel a slight soreness. As my head falls to the right, I nearly startle as I see Diana’s wide eyes staring at me.
“You’re awake,” she says, thankful as she scoots closer. “Oh thank Goddess.”
I watch as Diana stands, going to the side of the room where she can hit the “call” button. She then turns to me with a faint smile.
“Want some water?” she asks.
It’s as if she read my mind. As I swallow, my throat feels like sandpaper – drying and burning. I nod to her.
“What happened?” I ask, my voice raspy. Still, I gradually pull myself up until I’m sitting.
“Take it easy,” Diana says kindly, placing a hand on my shoulder. She hands me the water cup. “No need to push it.”
As I take the cup and bring it to my lips, I take note of how my body feels overall. Yes, I’m sore, but nothing feels broken or punctured. There’s just a lingering headache, if anything.
“I actually feel…,” I begin, but I’m cut off as Dr. Borsheim walks into the room, letting out a small sigh.
“Ah, Evelyn,” he begins. “Good to see you awake.”
I nod at him. “Hi, doctor…,” I trail out, glancing from him to Diana. “Does someone want to tell me what happened?”
“There was an explosion in the middle of the summer celebration,” Diana tells me, her voice soft and remorseful. “You went to find Kane and got caught right in the middle of it.”
I blink at her, my eyes widening. Oh Goddess. That’s right – I remember walking through the town square and then being thrown backward as heat and smoke brushed against me.
“Was anyone else hurt?” I ask quickly.
“No,” Diana says. “It seems everyone else was off getting food or watching the show that had just started. The area was clear.”
Well, at least there was that. It brings me some relief to know that no one else got caught up in the explosion.
“We’ve been told it was an act of the rogue wolves,” Dr. Borsheim states then. “They set up a few small explosives to cause a scene. I don’t think they intended for anyone to actually get hurt.”
I nearly snort, shaking my head, “Were they found? Any of the rogue wolves?”
“We don’t know,” Diana replies. “Nothing has been reported.”
I press out a breath as Diana hands me another full cup of water. Hopefully, the pack was able to catch the rogue *wolves, even if it was just a few. Kane was probably beside himself.
Speaking of Kane…
“How are you feeling?” Dr. Borsheim interrupts my thought. “You breathed in quite a bit of smoke and we believe you were thrown back pretty far by the blast. You suffered a few minor cuts and burns, but we were mainly concerned about your head.”

“I…,” I begin, again noting how my body feels. Just like before, I feel fairly fine. Just a few residual things, but nothing major. “I feel fine.”
“Fine?” he asks, raising a brow. “Your lungs aren’t aching? No pain at the back of your head.”
“No,” I reply. “Just a sore throat, which feels better now. A small headache.”
“That’s…that’s good,” Dr. Borsheim says. “Great, even. You seem to be healing rapidly, which is a great sign. This could mean that your wolf is getting stronger. Slowly but surely.”
His words momentarily stun me into silence.
“Really?” I breathe once I’ve regained use of my tongue.
He nods. “Actually, you may begin to notice a lot of changes due to your wolf getting stronger. Some good and some bad, but you’ll be noticing certain…effects. Certain things you should have experienced sooner, but were probably stunted by the medication,” Dr. Borsheim explains,
I soak in his words, trying to wrap my head around them. I’m not exactly sure what experiences he could be referring to, but I suppose I’ll be on the lookout nonetheless.
“Understood,” I tell him.
“Well, I think I can go ahead and clear you to go home,” Dr. Borsheim says: “Please let me know if you notice any issues. For now, just make sure to drink plenty of water and get some rest.
I give him a nod, still shocked that I’m able to go home so easily. I suppose I have my wolf to thank for that, even if she’s still quiet and tucked away.
“Would you like us to call someone to pick you up?” the doctor asks.
“That won’t be necessary.”
The sudden sound of another voice causes me to jump, my eyes snapping to the doorway.
There, Kane leans against the doorframe, his eyes already planted on me.
“I’ll be taking her home.”
