Chapter 99

Evelyn’s POV

After weeks and weeks of commotion, it seems like things have finally managed to calm down.

Kane and I haven’t worked out together for a few days, as if there is an unspoken agreement between us to keep our distance. Instead, I’ve been doing some exercises on my own and going on runs in the evenings. It has kept my body limber and my mind busy.

I’ve also been keeping up my other routines as I stop by the hospital every day and silently await any news from Alexander regarding if his father knows about my mother’s secret will. I don’t even know if Alexander has asked yet, but I really hope he will.

Today, though, there is a pack meeting being held – the first one since the festival. After lunch, I head to the meeting room along with the rest of Kane’s inner circle, yet none of them acknowledge me. All except Bianca who makes sure to give me a pointed dirty look.

Only a few minutes before the meeting is actually meant to start, Kane finally arrives, which surprises me. He’s more “late” than usual and I can’t help but wonder if that has something to do with me.

Or maybe I’m being ridiculous.

I highly doubt Kane spares that much thought or effort for me. It’s probably just a coincidence. And I hate that I noticed.

Resisting the urge to sigh, I give Kane a hint of a smile as he comes to take his seat beside me. At least he does me the honor of nodding back so I know he’s not completely ignoring me.

With everyone there, Kane begins to call the meeting to attention. However, he’s interrupted as the door opens and loudly shuts, causing everyone’s heads to turn. My eyebrows raise as I realize who has come to join us.

“Alexander?” I ask.

“What are you doing here?” Kane asks, his annoyance clear.

In turn, Alexander smiles casually, his hands sliding into his pockets. “I was invited,” he informs us.

“By who?” Kane presses.

“By me.”

Once more, everyone’s heads turn, all of our gazes falling on Bianca. For the second time, a wave of surprise

comes over me.

Why would she have invited him?

“You don’t have the authority to invite outsiders into our meetings,” Kane informs her coldly. This causes Bianca to shift in her seat, but still she tries to keep her chin high.

“He’s not an outsider,” she begins. “He’s the Alpha Prince. Doesn’t he have the right to know what’s going on in our pack?”

I can tell that Kane isn’t pleased with her rebuttal nor does he trust it. Admittedly, neither do I. There’s just something odd about Bianca allowing Alexander the chance to waltz in here. She doesn’t tend to do anything unless it also benefits herself.

“Fine,” Kane says, appearing as though he doesn’t want to deal with the headache. “Stay.”

This pleases Alexander and he finds an open seat, settling into it silently. His attention then moves to me and he offers a warm smile.

I try my best to reciprocate it before my lips fall flat once more, my gaze turning to Kane. He’s tense now, and yet pushes forward with the meeting.

“I want to thank all of you for your help with the summer celebration,” Kane begins. “The townspeople were pleased and the event was a success.

“Mostly a success, he means,” Alexander chimes in. “Before the rogue wolves attacked.”

There are a few murmurs following Alexander’s comment and I can’t help but make a face at him, insisting that he doesn’t interrupt. Only, he doesn’t meet my eye.

“No,” Kane says. “I meant what I said. It was a success. The rogue wolf attack was less than ideal, but our pack handled it quickly and efficiently. I appreciate all of your help, even if we lost the opportunity to question the wolves.”

Kane groans as he sucks on my fingers, tasting me and making me squirm before him. I whimper loudly, causing his eyes to blink open, a dangerous look of desire resting within gaze.

He releases my fingers and my hand goes right back to his chest, running along the muscles of his pecs as both of his hands are on my waist now. Somehow, I’ve come another step closer to him, both of us breathing heavy as we linger in the space between us.

Without realizing what I’m doing, my hand slides up until it’s resting against the side of his face, feeling the shape of his jaw, the prick of his stubble. I want to feel it against the inside of my thighs.

“Kane,” I breathe.
