The man who brought my things in is chained to the podium in the center of the royal courtroom. There’s an iron cuff around his neck. His arms are bound behind him, and there’s a muzzle over his mouth. It’s Santiago Polucci standing in front of him. Not Ivar. I don’t see Ivar anywhere.
I feel exhausted despite how much rest I got today. I haven’t been able to let go of Ragnar’s hand. Any little sudden movements have me jumping, and I know others can see it. I’m so aware of my surroundings that it’s becoming hostile. Ragnar is trying his best to keep me calm, but he’s on edge himself now that we’re both out in the open.
Everyone seems upset. So many misunderstandings happened overnight because of me. Seeing him again is making my skin crawl. I grew up with Paul Macy. We were on the same training teams at the academy. His eyes are trained on me, and all I can think of is the moment right before the bomb went off.
“You tried to kill me,” I find myself saying.
“You killed hundreds of us,” he growls.
“Who put you up to this?” I demand.
“I don’t need anyone to tell me to get rid of you. The alpha should have-
I cut him off. He groans as he falls to the floor, as I spin the saliva in his mouth. He tugs on his binds as he chokes on spit.
“Who put you up to this? You’re a low-rank beta with not very many prospects. I would know. You were useless during training. Answer me,” I shout. I finally let go of Ragnar’s hand and jump over the podium.
“You aren’t shit without these things. We all know that,” he chokes out when I release him. I look back at Ragnar.
-Let him go.-
“Are you fucking-” he growls and looks away. “Fine. Release him.
The council room erupts in whispers. Some of my guards are quick to step forward.
“If you can get past me, you’re free to go,” I tell him.
Santiago and a couple of other Lycan release him. He looks around the room and then at me. He scoffs the way he always has. He rushes me without hesitation. I side-step him and kick his left leg out from under him. The slap that his face and hands make when he hits the marble floor makes everyone laugh.
“Get up. An Omega is making a fool out of you again, Paul. What would your father say?” I taunt him.

He growls and turns around to swipe at me. I dodge his attempt and go for my first strike. My fist hits its mark right in his belly. The wind is knocked out of him, and I take this moment to use his spit to channel it inside his body spin it faster this time. I turn him over and force him onto his knees.
“Bitch,” he manages to cry out. I step up to him as his wolf whines in fear
“I think he’d be severely disappointed in the way you turned out, but you can’t really expect much from a low, They sent you here to die, but I’m not giving you or them the satisfaction. Give me a name.”
“How are you doing that?” he pants when I stop channelling the water inside of him.
“I was never one of you. It takes a little longer for a 1 ycan to develop. It’s just one of the many things I have more than surpassed you all in,” I crouch down in front of him. I know your family. Your mother, Brooke. Your father, Paul senior

Your sisters, Jenna and Olive. You’ve lost enough, the same way the rest of us have. Tell me, and I’ll make sure you go home
to them.”
“You betrayed us,” he shakes his head,
“No, I was never a part of any of you. You know that more than most. They put us together at the academy because they thought we were going to rank the lowest. I put us above the rest of them. The six of us never really got along, but you always trusted me to get you where you needed to be. Tell me who or you’re not walking out of here. You put my mate in danger. He almost died. You remember what that feels like, right?”
He knows I’m lying and lowers his gaze, swallowing hard. He’s taken a chosen now, but I’ve never seen the two of them together. Unlike what happened to me, he loved his mate and would have done whatever she asked. But she was stronger than most, and packlands always demand a sacrifice. Heather was no exception.
“The Bakers want Kaylee back,” he sighs. “She’s their alpha, and you’re keeping her here against her will. They’re not going to hold back. Everyone blames you for what’s happening.”
“Do you?” I ask him.
“Omega or not, you were part of our pack. You betrayed us,” he looks me in the eyes.
“After everything, you really believe that I didn’t deserve justice? After the constant humiliation, after your alpha abused me, after he chose another female to take my place and tried to strip me of everything that made me a person. Everything I worked my ass off to obtain. You all turned the other way, and I’m the one who betrayed you? Okay,” I straighten up. “Maybe, and maybe I’m just getting even.”
“You’re not this person,” he shakes his head.
“It’s so convenient to say that after it was all of you who turned me into what I am now. I did my best to give all of you everything I had to offer, and in the end, I wasn’t even worth the position I worked so hard to obtain.”
“You didn’t have a wolf. You were not fit to be a Luna.”
“Not that position. I could really careless about that. Luna Romano was a sorry-ass excuse of a Luna, and being dragged behind a useless man who takes credit for shit he didn’t do is not exactly the life anyone wants to live.
“I just wanted to help you. I wanted to make sure your pups were safe and grew up healthy. I wanted to make sure that those of you who didn’t have the same resources I did got everything you needed to continue making our city prosper. It’s all I wanted. To finish school and live the life I deserved without bothering anyone.
“I didn’t want any of this, Paul. I didn’t ask for it. But here we are. I’m only treating all of you the same way you treated me for years. I am taking a page out of the packlands guide to a united society. And what is rule number one in the packlands?”
“Protect the pack by any means. Especially from those who seek to harm us,” he recites.
“I was harmed, and my mate was harmed with the bomb you put in my room. Fuck you, Paul. The one thing I will never overlook is anyone trying to harm my mate. Last night, I stood over him, covered in his blood, not knowing if I was going to be able to bring him back. I do know one thing, though,” I place my hand on his head. “You are never coming back.
He drops to the floor as I pull the water in his body out from his mouth. He gasps for air and scratches at his throat trying to breathe properly, but the anger in me no longer cares. Once he’s lying still on the floor, I take a deep breath and walk back over to my seat beside Ragnar.
“The Bakers need an owner that can crack down on them, or they’re going to keep doing dumb shit like this,” I reach for my phone. “They’re going to pose a problem for Ivar. We need to take care of that before it gets worse.”
