Sophia, are you listening to me?” my father asks Sophie as she stares right at him with a completely blank expression. He ooks over at me questioningly. “What did you do to her? Is she so upset that she’s catatonic?”

I’m literally sitting right here,” she sneers at him. I laugh at the expression he makes when he turns his attention back to her Yes, I can hear you. I’m just-” she shrugs. “I’ll have to catch up with you guys,” she says, reaching into her satchel for a file. This is everything in my proposal to help the packs here. Employment, distribution, and aid.”

Sophia, you can’t just-”

Dad,” I stop him.

This is her idea,” he proclaims and then growls as he inspects what she put together. “Are you two fighting?”

No,” I smile because she’s been in a daze from the moment she finally realized what the woman was trying to tell her. “It’s a good idea. Why isn’t General Fassim doing anything about this?”

That’s not what we pay him for, son,” he rolls his eyes. “Chris does what he’s told. Your temper can be whatever the fuck that vas. “he waves in the direction Sophie went in. “Are you going to tell me what’s going on with her?”

I think it’s best for her to decide when you guys need to know,” I shrug.

It’s not bad, right?”

Of course, not,” I shake my head. “She’s got to come to terms with it first. You know how she gets when things change.”

If she wants to stay a little longer, we’re not in a hurry,” he stops to turn back a page so he can reread it. “How long has she >een planning this? It’s very detailed.”

She started on that last night. She only worked on it for a couple of hours before she fell asleep.” I had to wrap my head round this myself, and it took me most of the night. I didn’t sleep a wink.

Hmm,” he hums and continues to go through it.

How are things with Zara?” I ask. I don’t need to hear anything when I see the smile on his face. “How is Dellia?”

Adorable. Helena isn’t coping well. Zara has basically taken over.”

No news on Valor?”

‘None. It’s like the ground swallowed him up. She doesn’t want to accept it.”

‘Maybe with us in the capital, we can send out more teams,” I suggest.

‘He either doesn’t want to be found, or he’s dead. He’s not an issue. Alex wants to start negotiating to get the wolves back Not the city, just the dogs.”

“What does Ivar want?” I ask. He scratches his nose nervously.

“This isn’t up to Ivar, Gnar. You’ve always known that. These wolves belong to Kaylee

“Dad-”

“Listen.” he says, placing his hand over mine. “I know. She’s given us a hard time, but at the end of the day, she’s still what your brother wants. If she agrees to rejoin the packlands, you give her what she wants as a peace offering. She’s one of us now. The same way Sophia is.

“You know Sophie loves her. She vouched for her before everything came to light, and Kaylee realized she was in the wrong Your brother has come very far, all things considered. There’s no use in hanging on to grudges.”

“It’s not a grudge, old man. She’s just a bitch,” I scoff.

‘Are you upset she hit Sophie, or because she first rejected your brother?”

“Yes,” I nod. “I am going to go find Sophia. Take that to the General. We’ll see you on the plane in a few.”

My father will never know what Ivar gave up, all because this girl never respected him. She still doesn’t. Her insecurities are so deep that she doesn’t care that she’s embarrassing herself or Ivar. He’s settled for everything he hated to keep her happy. and it’s never been enough for her. The issue isn’t just that she ran up on Sophia while she had her back turned to her and punched her in the face like the coward she’s always proven to be. The problem has always been her attitude towards all of

Sophia is nowhere to be found, and while I know she’s not dumb enough to leave the base alone, the part of me that’s getting protective of our little situation is beginning to panic.

Rooftop,” Kennedy says when I walk into the weaponry. Sometimes when she’s stressed out with her medical stuff, she comes in here to clean her weapons, Kennedy’s, and mine.

When I finally catch up to her, she’s sitting at the top of the dome in a beach chair with a little cooler and snacks. It’s sunset, and the view from here is phenomenal. She discovered this the night we arrived. Most nights, the three of us end up here ogether having dinner before heading to bed.

There you are, I clear my throat. “Are you okay?”

I’ve thought a lot about this,” she says, holding out a glass Crush bottle. I take it and sit down beside her.

I sure hope so, I laugh.

Do you think he’ll have both our affinities?” she asks, looking over at me.

The glare of the orange sky behind me makes her eyes look like they’re bright orange. It startles me for a moment, and 1 can’t bring myself to look away. This woman has quite literally changed everything in my life and has given me more than I hould have ever been willing to accept.

It’s not easy to think that I didn’t know if I could ever love her as much as I did Clarity, but here we are. Two completely different

types of love. That first kiss hurt deep down into my soul, and I don’t think I ever recovered from it I think about hat pain sometimes and remember the way she resisted coming closer. I hated it because I always wanted her this close

You okay?” she reaches out without hesitation and cups my face.

‘Yeah, I nod.

‘So?” she demands.

‘So, what?” I ask, confused.

‘Do you think he’ll have both our affinities?”

“Fuck, I hope not,” I admit. “That thing inside of you is half me, and I can think a whole lot of things I could do with hot

water.”

“Ragnar, she laughs and offers me a brownie with peanut butter on it. This has been her favorite snack for the past week. and I haven’t been able to tell her that I can’t stand the smell of peanut butter. “I feel like there should be signs, right?”

“Of you being pregnant?” I grin. A rush of adrenaline floods through my system now that I’ve officially said it out loud

“Mhm, she hums and lets out my favorite nervous giggle.

“You’ve been quiet lately, I inform her. “That’s your third time today eating that,” I point at the brownie in her hand. “You sleep all night, and you’re starting to take naps throughout the day. I thought you were pushing yourself to finish all of your little side quests you took on since we got here. I know you’re not as active, and you’ve been protecting yourself a little more than you usually do.

‘It’s an instinct, I think. You’re normally as reckless as I am. I also think that you were nervous about heading home this time around. Things got a little out of hand the last time we were there. If it helps, I got us more security.”

That does help, she turns her body to face me. “Are we ready for this?”

I’m really excited about this,” I admit. “I didn’t think it would ever happen for me.”

‘Same page, she blushes. Then she growls and shoves me. “This is all your fault.”

I take full responsibility for this,” I laugh.

‘No, I mean, she growls and sits back on her chair. “I told you that I wasn’t sure if we should go out for a run three weeks igo. Especially so close to the full moon.”

She did tell me that.

I didn’t hear any protests when I caught you in the middle of the desert,” I scoff.

Idiot, she takes my hand. Her eyes meet mine, and I feel how happy she is about this. “I am a little scared to go back. Especially now.”

We’ll be good. Just focus on school this time around. No work. Promise?”

But-

Hey, too much can hurt you and the baby. If he does have your affinity, it can double the strength of yours to protect him Promise me. Besides, you said you wanted to focus on the house when we got back. You have an unlimited budget”

Can we negotiate the fish tank?”

Absolutely not, I laugh.

Fine, but I get to design my personal medical room in the glass room under the house call dibs on it
