“Thanks for helping me out,” I tell Xavier as he pulls his sleeve back down. “And for the tests from before she turned you.”

“Are you all right? You seem a little nervous,” he says as he sets his coat down on my exam table.

“It’s Kaylee,” I shrug. “Her body is doing significantly better than when we first started, but I’m afraid that I’m not going to be able to help her.”

“You can keep telling the others that you’re doing this as a favor to Ivar, but you know that’s not true,” he smirks. “Why is she so important to you? Why do you care knowing she’d let you die if she had the chance?”

“My brother Gavin,” I shrug and hop on the table beside him. “I don’t like to talk about him because it feels like I’m being scured through the chest even just thinking about him. He loved her, and I don’t mean the way he loved me.

“Before he found his mate, I used to think Kay was it. They didn’t know that their bond was because they were brother and sister. She stopped coming around when he was preparing to become the official beta. All they did was practice together.

“I know that if he had known she was his sister, he would have protected her the same way he always protected me. Her parents threw her to the Lycans. They weren’t her biological parents, but they were all she knew, and now all she had left was me. Whether she likes it or not. Whether I like it or not.

“And she reminds me of him. She’s stubborn and courageous, just like him. My choices affected her a lot, and while I’m not inclined to apologize, I do feel guilty about her being at the expense of what I did. I just told Ivar that it’s okay for her to be mad at me. What matters is that she’s alive and healing, hopefully. I can never tell with them.”

“They’re healing just fine,” he smiles reassuringly.

“So,” I bump his elbow with mine. “Anastasia Polucci.”

“Shut up,” he growls playfully. “Anastasia fucking Polucci.”

“I get it. She’s the man of every princess’s dream,” I grin. “She is evil, straightforward, and literally the best person I know.”

“All those things are true,” he smirks.

“You deserve all that I’m really proud of you,” I pat his leg

How much more until you become an official doctor?” he asks

“Some of my mission time was added to my residency, but I still have another year My surgical traming hasn’t even been approved yet, and something tells me that Ragnar is going to postpone that until after the baby is born

“Is he allowed to do that?”

“Apparently. He is the King,” I remind him.

“He abuses his power,” he scoffs. When I turn to stare at him, he does his best to avoid eye contact.

“Don’t bite your tongue, Xavier. You’re mated to one of the most notorious Lycans in their history. That in itself is a crime. I hope our sons are best friends.”

“Do you know that he’s a boy?” he grins.

“No, I’d have to officially examine her for that. I just really, really want him to be a boy so our sons can be best friends.”

“Why do you think you’re not going to be able to help Kaylee?” he asks.

“I don’t think that. I’m just afraid of it,” I jump off the table and place the samples of his blood in the reader.

I already have Ivar’s enzymes so that I can try using them on the samples. Hopefully, I can spin them enough to get a decent read on it. A sample of Xavier’s blood gives me an idea of how the bite will react with her DNA. An alpha female has never been turned before. No Lycan has ever been crazy enough to try. And then there’s the aftermath. There’s no guarantee that she will ever be able to procreate. Her rank makes it difficult to house the power of a Lycan pup.

My child amplifies my affinity, but my affinity is only strong because it’s based on a very important element, but it’s nowhere near the power that someone like Kaylee will have once she’s made the transition and added Ivar’s power in their mating. Having a baby can be fatal.

“Sophie, there is a company in America that specializes in stuff like this,” Xavier says and comes over to see what I’m doing. “I can give you a recommendation once you’ve completed your residency.

“At the moment, they’re working with vampires to identify what allows them to heal instantaneously. I’m sure that if you do end up needing more help, they would be more than delighted to give you a second opinion on your methods.”

“Are you talking about Oroboros Inc?” I ask.

“Yeah, how did you know that?” he asks, leaning into the monitor that’s displaying the microscope I’m using on his blood sample.

Oroboros Inc is the company where Dr Galloway learned to do what she did to me. There are a lot of horrible rumors surrounding that company. Trafficking, snatching orphans off the street, illegal experimentation, and malpractice of medicine.

“I would love for you to give me a recommendation even if this does work.” I agree. “I have heard a lot about them. How are you acquainted with this company?”

“They sell the best hallucinogens on the market. They have a lot of pharmaceutical stuff Both medical and recreational I have a couple of contracts with them, and Baby is benehung from them. It keeps her collection of assholes well behaved”

“Are you okay with that?” I ask teasingly

“I think you should make her the warden of the Lycan Capital Prison. She can not only reform the criminally insane, but she can also get them to teach her their family secrets. It’s how she gets away with a whole lot more than the Kings know. It’s kind of one of the things that made me fall in love with her.”

“How did you two end up on each other’s radars?” I laugh.

“You,” he smiles. “We’ve kept in contact since we met on your base.”

“And it helps that she’s insanely beautiful,” I add. He laughs and nods.

“She also has a filthy fucking mouth on her,” he adds. “And from the moment we met, she’s always been straightforward with what she’s wanted from me. I’ve never sensed any malice or that she’s ever lied to me. It’s completely different from my mating.”

“Me too,” I pat his hand. “It’s like I was caught in a massive lie, and when everything hit the fan, I was able to break away from it, and it hurt, but in a good way. Ragnar is a little shit, but I love him. I know he has my best interests at heart. I could never talk to or bother Santiago with anything concerning me the way I rely on Ragnar.”

“Yeah,” he huffs. “Stop talking about weird shit. I love my life now. Don’t take me back.”

“You started it,” I bump him.

“Why is that there?” he asks, pointing at the screen.

“This is what makes you a Lycan,” I point at the enzymes. “So, how it works is you’re a werewolf, and your body continues to produce like a wolf, but you have these in you waiting to change them into what you are now. See these?” I point at the clear images. “That is what they change into. The result of having a mate with really sharp teeth. It’s cemented your body and spirit to perfectly that it should feel like a genuine mate bond.”

“It feels better,” he admits. “I can confidently say, I’ve never felt this before in my entire existence.”

“Because we were rogue,” I remind him. “Here, we’re not just a part of ourselves. We’re a part of them. We’ve never had this connection before, and while it’s not a pack link, it’s home. I love these people, and I don’t believe I could ever do to them what I did to Artume City, because this is where I belong. And even if I were shunned. I couldn’t talk myself into doing what I did.”
