I take a deep breath, not knowing how I even begin to explain this. He stares at me for a while and slidesup

onto the exam table

“How bad is p

“Two out of three.” I answer.

“That’s good, right?”

“It’s okay. A good start. I shake my head.

“A good start means not ready,” he sighs. I nod, not knowing what else to say

“Ivar, the damage done was extensive. We’ve made it this tai,” I try to reassure him. “Two out of three is better than

nothing”

“Is there anything I can do?” he asks almost defeatedly.

“You can be there for her. It’s been a long road already, and she’s made significant progress. That means the treatment is

working. Kay asked if there were alternatives to conceiving”

“I’m not doing that,” he growls.

“No, of course not. I’m thinking that maybe we can store away some of her eggs now. Your bloodline is strong enough to

overwhelm the wolf traits. I am not even half, and I shifted.”

“A wolf wouldn’t be able to handle it,” he shakes his head. “It’s not even a big issue, Soph. I just want her. That’s all i want

Nothing else matters to me.”

“Okay.” I say because I don’t want to rub salt into the wound any more than I already have. Tim going to take those and

get a second opinion. We have the rest of the week until the full moon passés”

warning needing her to get away from me. She leaves, and I have to take a couple of deep breaths to calm myself. Before l

can even think, everything in front of me scatters across the floor.

“Sophia.” Ragnar rushes into my lab. He sees the mess, and I know he knows why.

“I’m failing.” I choke out.

“Sophia-” I growl, stopping him from trying to comfort me. “Baby, you didn’t create this problem.”

“So, I just leave our brother to all of that?” I growl, pointing up the stairs. “I can’t even channel her wounds because it can

kill her.”

“Sophia,” he sighs, taking my hand. Tears stream down my face when I look up at him.

“I don’t know what else to do,” I blink away my tears. “It has to be plan B.”

“Plan B is dangerous. Especially, right now,” he shakes his head.

“I spoke to my grandmother about it already. She agreed to come with me,” I inform him.

“You’re out of your fucking mind if you think I am going to let you go without me,” he growls. “I am not risking you or our son for her. I don’t understand why you think you need to do this.”

“I don’t expect you to,” I look up at him. “But you can’t stop me from going.”

His hand covers my mouth, and he pulls me into him. His eyes are dark as he looks back at me the way he always does

when he knows I’ve made my mind up.

“If something happens to you, I will never be able to forgive myself, Sophia. I will destroy her. Even if ivar hates me. I will end her,” he swears. I place my hands on his chest and push his back enough to get his hand off my face.

“I don’t like that your faith in me is faltering,” I say and turn away. I feel the stab in my belly at my words. He’s more than

upset. “I’m not going into a battlefield. And even if I was, it’s hardly the ones we’ve already been on.”

“That’s not what this is,” he scoffs. “You’re pregnant, and you’re taking this a little too far.”

“Ragnar,” Ivar’s voice breaks the silence. I look back to see him standing a few feet away from his brother.

“Sophia doesn’t owe you shit,” Ragnar growls when he moves to get out. “And she sure as fuck doesn’t owe your stupid

“Ragnar,” I growl, cutting him off.

“Even if this works, I don’t want her here,” he says and leaves.

“He’s just scared,” I try to reassure Ivar. “You know how he is. It’s just the fear talking”

“He’s right”

“Don’t, I wave him off.

“I’m sorry.” he sighs, pushing his hair out of his face. “He’s right. I shouldn’t have let you-”

“Get the fuck out,” I growl at him.

“Soph-”

“Go,” I shout.

My email pings, and I’m about to ignore the notification when I see it has the Oroboros logo. I open up my email on the computer and see it’s a letter from Dr Ava Lancer. An invitation for this Friday. I get up and rush up the stairs. Kaylee is

sitting on our new couch, wiping her tears.

“Let’s go,” I take her hand.

“Soph-”

“Fuck them. They don’t understand. Come on,” I tug on her arm. “We need Aimee.”

She nods and follows me out to the car. I hate doing this, but I shut Ragnar out when he tries to tell me to get back to the house. I laugh when both our phones begin to ring.

“So, plan B is doing this the hard way. Aimee and I needed it in case something like this happened. I was sure everything

would be fine, but it’s better to be prepared. She’s going to extract about half you eggs, so we have more than one shot at giving you guys an heir once this is over.

“It’s going to be a little painful, but I’m going to be here with you through all of it. I’m not letting your heart give up. It’s my biggest concern. There’s an experimental doctor in New York who can probably get us where we need to be faster. I want

to do this before I get bigger.”

“Soph, why are you doing this? Because you feel guilty?”

“I don’t feel guilty. What do I have to feel guilty for?”

“Maybe it’s your choice, brother,” she scoffs.

“First of all, fuck you. You don’t get to throw your insecurities in Ivar’s face. You cheated on him, not the other way aro Second, Ragnar hates you because you have been a fucking nightmare from the moment you found out war was your

mate. All of this is your fault. All of it. So shut the fuck up and stop reaching for shit that isn’t there”

“Then why? If you’re not in love with Ivar and you don’t feel guilty, why?”

“We don’t have anyone else, Kay,” I sigh. “No one. You and I are all that’s left of our bloodlines. The Guenges

exactly something to be proud of, but they’re all gone. Gavin and Oliver didn’t get what we have. Fin sick of losing beteke

and I know you are too. Som just shut the fuck up and accept that all I want to do is help you.”
