Chapter 16

Vaughn Sterling was about to step forward when he saw the other man beat him to it. Leander Roth pulled me into his arms, whispering words of comfort.

He watched as Leander gently wiped away my tears, then led me to the car, his arm protective around my shoulders.

The car drove off into the distance.

Vaughn stood frozen on the sidewalk. At that moment, he realized that I was no longer his one and only.

But did it even matter?

As long as I was okay, he could handle it. He’d use any means necessary to snatch me back after university graduation.

Thinking back to the phone call he’d overheard, Vaughn immediately booked a flight back home.

He ended up on the same flight as me. From a distance, he watched me cry, my eyes red and swollen. That man, Leander, was also ›n his phone consulting doctors about my mother’s condition.

As soon as they landed at the airport, Vaughn hailed a cab and headed straight to the hospital where my mother was being treated.

He tycked himself into a corner of the hallway. He listened as the doctor explained the situation to me: Your mother’s condition had taken a sudden, drastic turn. She needed an emergency kidney transplant, but we hadn’t found a compatible donor yet.

The wait for a suitable kidney can be very long,” the doctor said. “I suggest contacting as many hospitals as possible.”

Thank you, Dr. Carter.”

My expression was grim. Beside me, Leander took my trembling hand. “I have a few friends in the medical field,” he said soothingly. I’ve already sent them your mother’s medical reports. The situation is still manageable. I’ll have them check if there are any vailable donors that match her.”

Thank you.” I nodded. I walked into the ward with Rowan Vance.

Evelyn lay in the hospital bed, looking frail and exhausted. “Don’t cry,” she whispered. “I’m fine. It’s just the same old problems.”

Mom, I’m not going to let anything happen to you,” I said, my voice firm despite my tears.

had already lost my father. I couldn’t lose anyone else. Rowan and I had already told the doctor we wanted to test for a match. Whoever was compatible would donate a kidney.

Elara, I know what you and Rowan are planning, and I won’t have it,” Evelyn said sternly. “You’re both still young. You have your vhole lives ahead of you. People can live with one kidney, but there are always risks. If either of you gave me a transplant, I’d never have a moment’s peace for the rest of my life…”

Mom, the doctor said they’re still searching for a donor,” I replied. “Don’t worry. We’ll find a match.”

Just remember,” Evelyn emphasized again, neither you nor Rowan are allowed to donate. I’d rather lose my life than shorten

rours.”

Okay, okay. We understand,” I said, nodding obediently.

The next day, Rowan and I went to get tested anyway. To my surprise, Leander insisted on donating a kidney to my mother as well.

I’m an adult, and this is my own decision,” Leander said, gently stroking my long hair to calm me. I want to solve your pain and your problems. Give me a chance to do this for you, okay?”

I felt a lump in my throat. I gave his chest a light, playful punch.

How had I gotten so lucky to find a man who loved me this much?

A week later, the results came back. Neither I nor Leander met the standards for a transplant.

Only Rowan was a match. But because of his history of heart disease, the doctor warned that there was a high risk of cardiac arrest during the procedure.

Rowan was stubborn. “It doesn’t matter. The risk is only around twenty percent. I can undergo the transplant for my mother.”

The doctor looked troubled. He was just about to go over the specific risks in detail when the office door swung open.

“Dr. Carter, a match result just came in from Everett Second Hospital! We can proceed with the transplant immediately!” another doctor announced, holding a report that showed a high compatibility with Evelyn.

I couldn’t understand the technical medical jargon, but when I saw the compatibility rate was over 90%, I burst into tears.

God was finally being merciful for once.

“However, Everett Second Hospital is withholding the donor’s personal information,” the doctor added. “They said the individual doesn’t wish to be identified.”

“I understand,” Dr. Carter said. He looked at the report, which was almost a perfect match. He turned to Rowan. “I’ll start scheduling the surgery. You can go pay the deposit for the hospitalization now.”

“Will do.”

Rowan’s tense body gradually relaxed. He immediately headed to the ward to tell their mother the good news.

The transplant surgery took place a week later.

I watched as my mother was wheeled into the operating room. I closed my eyes and prayed silently.

Three hours later, the doors finally opened.

The surgeon walked out, looking tired but relieved. “The surgery was a complete success. Your mother hasn’t woken up yet, and we’ll need to monitor her urine output for the next twenty-four hours. However, the donor suffered a massive hemorrhage during the surgery. He’s currently being moved to the ICU for observation.”

Hearing that, my heart twisted in my chest.

I knew the donor wanted to remain anonymous, but I couldn’t help but worry. “Doctor, please ask him again if he’s willing to meet us. We’ll do whatever we can to meet any conditions he has.”

‘T’ll try,” the doctor promised. “But let’s wait until he wakes up.”

I watched as my mother was moved to the recovery ward.

Two hours later, Evelyn finally opened her eyes.

Mom, how do you feel?” I asked urgently. “Are you in pain anywhere?”

Evelyn shook her head weakly. Then, she whispered, “Elara… the donor who gave me the kidney… was Vaughn Sterling.”

On the eve of his wedding, Raymon Merritt’s property was seized by his fiancée, Velma Hogan.

Even his corneas were stolen to save Velma. In his hospital bed, he woke up blind, broken, and powerless….
