Mary

His were dark, mine lifeless. The atmosphere was suffocating.

The girl, instead of distancing herself, boldly draped her arms around Jason’s neck, whispering in his ear. A sharp pain pierced my eyes. Although I knew he had completely betrayed me, my werewolf instincts still filled me with possessiveness. I wanted to take him away from that girl, mark him, and make him belong to me.

I looked away, got in my car, and drove off, never glancing back.

Soon after I arrived home, I heard another car pull up.

As I stood before my dressing table, removing a necklace, a tall, solid figure blocked the entrance. Jason’s presence filled the room. His hands braced on the glass cabinet, he leaned close, looking at my face. “Angry?”

I didn’t look at him, slowly placing the necklace down.”Angry enough to kill you. You better watch out.”

He was silent for a moment.”The Cooper family is interested in collaborating on the Polaris Project. I’ve been meeting with Zane Cooper, their eldest son. That girl… is his sister.”

‘So, if you don’t keep her company, he won’t cooperate?”

‘Sophia Wells, I’m trying to explain! Don’t be sarcastic!”

‘I don’t think an explanation is necessary,” I finally turned to him, my gaze piercing. “Jason, if you’re tired of me, if you want a new female werewolf in this house, I can step aside.”

Jason’s face hardened.”What did you say?”

I sighed. “I said we can sever the bond.”

pushed him away.

He pulled me back, gripping my face.”Don’t even think about it.”

I remained silent. My wolf sneered, “IDIOT!”

I’d already thought about it, and I’d already acted on it.

I was done with him.

ason came home late that night only to leave again after a phone call-a sweet, girlish voice, punctuated by sobs.

The next morning, my lawyer and best friend, Summer Grant, sent me a screenshot: the latest social media post from Jason’s girlfriend. A picture of two hands-one large, one small-making heart shapes against a sunrise, captioned:”Feeling each other’s heartbeat in the tender sunrise, under the watch of Luna Goddess.” The larger hand was clearly Jason’s.

I sat there, clutching my water glass. When I set it down, a sharp crack resonated, mirroring the fracture within me. I comforted my wolf, “I won’t make you wait too long.”

For days, Jason didn’t come home. We only saw each other at company meetings-him at the head of the table, me seated with other executives. There was no eye contact. I didn’t go looking for him.
