Chapter 12

I put the Northgate condo up for sale through a realtor.

Three months later, it sold.

I got my money back-every cent I’d put into it.

I kept the Riverside house for myself.

The mortgage still had three years left on it. I was still the one paying it every month.

But this time? It was actually my house.

I hired someone to fix that crack in the living room wall.

I bought a new couch-a good one, the kind I’d wanted for years.

I ordered a flower stand online and set it up on the balcony.

Not because Lily had one in her place.

Because I wanted one for mine.

I’d never bought it before because Marcus always said “don’t waste money on decorations.”

Well, Marcus wasn’t here anymore.

Saturday morning, I went to the farmers market. I picked up some pork ribs on sale.

That afternoon, I made honey-glazed ribs.

I ate them by myself at the kitchen table.

They tasted pretty damn good.

I’d never made them in eight years because Marcus told me he hated anything sweet.

Turned out he’d been lying about that too. Just one more lie in a mountain of them.

After dinner, I washed the dishes and put everything away,

Then I sat down on my new couch-the one that didn’t have a broken spring poking through.

Chapter 12

That “Our Family” group chat was long gone from my phone. Once you leave a group, it disappears.

No notifications. No messages. No trace.

Like it never existed.

But I knew it had existed.

It ran for eight years.

I’d been trapped in that marriage for eight years.

They had their secret group. I didn’t.

They had their lies. I didn’t.

Now they had nothing.

I had a house. I had a job. I had a life that was completely mine.

That was enough.

The sun was setting outside my window, painting the sky orange and pink.

I walked over to the balcony and watered the pothos plant on my new flower stand.

The leaves looked healthy-bright green and reaching toward the light.

I didn’t need anyone to remind me to water it.

I could remember on my own.

I could take care of myself.
