Chapter 1
After three full days of labor. I finally gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
After a quick glance, the nurse who had been waiting by my side immediately took him away.
I stared blankly at the door. Ethan gently stroked my furrowed brow.
“Vivian, we’ll have more children in the future. You’re so understanding. I’ll make it up to you someday.”
I turned my head away, avoiding his touch.
He froze for a moment, then reached for my hand again. I pushed him away in resistance.
“As long as you and your sister–in–law are satisfied.”
Uttering that whole sentence seemed to use up every ounce of strength I had.
My body was weak beyond belief, and my chest was a numb, silent void.
The hospital room was filled with the smell of blood, and the silence was unnerving.
His expression shifted dramatically. He crouched down and cupped my face in his hands.
“Why are you acting so strange with me? You used to love calling me Ethan, didn’t you?“,
Yes. When we were dating, I loved calling him that.
After I married into the Pierce family, Olivia–the woman he had been engaged to since childhood–married his older
brother instead.
Ethan took extra special care of her.
But even so, things between us were no different from before.
!
I never fought for anything. He would smile approvingly and call me understanding,
As days passed, I became a hollow doll without émotions. He forgot that I used to have a lively personality.
Olivia had a weak constitution. It took her a long time to get pregnant.
My firstborn son, whom I had nearly died to bring into the world, was sent to my widowed sister–in–law’s room before I
could even see him.
Ethan held my hand tightly, his eyes filled with sympathy.
“You have a strong body. You’ll have many more children. Besides, the child is being raised by Olivia, who is well–educated

and cultured. You should be happy about it.”
I suppressed all the emotions inside me, nodded, and said okay.
I said okay five times. But I didn’t get to keep a single child.
My hair was plastered to my face with cold sweat. My breath was growing weaker by the moment.
Ethan pretended not to notice and continued.
“I’ve made it perfectly clear that you’re the most important person to me. But you keep embarrassing me over and over
again. What, do you want me to take the child back just to make you happy?”
I let out a bitter laugh. I had no idea what I had done to anger him or make him feel embarrassed.
Ever since I married him, his mother had taught me every day to bear him children as soon as possible.
Not only did I have to kneel in my room for three hours each day, but I also had to choke down hard–to–swallow herbal
medicine.
He knew all of this.
When news of my first son’s death came, I rushed into Olivia’s room despite being stopped.
She didn’t even let me see the child one last time. She had him sent straight to the funeral home.
I went mad, demanding she give me an explanation. Ethan came and stopped me.
“Are you crazy? I’ve already had people look into it. It has nothing to do with Olivia. Are you saying she should die just
because your child died?”
I knelt on the ground, clutching his clothes desperately, tears of blood streaming from my eyes.
“Ethan, that was your own flesh and blood. Doesn’t it hurt you at all?”
In response to my repeated questioning, he roughly pulled back the baby blanket and spoke with disgust.
“He just wasn’t meant to live. No one else is to blame.”
That one sentence made my heart plummet to rock bottom.
My thoughts returned to the present, Ethan looked at me guiltily.
“I know you’ve suffered. But don’t worry–when the child grows up a bit, I’ll have her call you Mother.”
He suppressed the vicious words in his heart.

But they landed in my ears, every single one of them.
*“My brother is gone. If you hadn’t kept having children and provoking Olivia, she wouldn’t have had to raise yours.
Honestly, you brought this on yourself.“*
I stared numbly at his neatly pressed coat and spoke softly.
“How could I possibly be suffering? Even if you wanted my life, I wouldn’t complain.”
