Chapter 2
A dull thud came from inside the room. Olivia had arrived late, carrying the child.
She knelt weakly on the ground, her tear–streaked face truly pitiful.
“Ethan, give the child back to Vivian. I’ve experienced the pain of losing a child too. If I raise this one, word will get out,
and people will talk badly about her.”
Six children and not a single one left. In an ordinary family, they would have divorced me long ago.
What’s more, I was married into the Pierce family, one of the most prominent families in Seattle. His mother had long
been dissatisfied with me.
He clenched his fists tightly and looked at me worriedly.
Then Olivia let out a cry and fainted on the floor, but she protected the child securely.
Ethan immediately picked her up. She shook her head understandingly.
“Don’t worry about me. It’s my fault for not being able to bear children for the Pierce family.”
Her voice grew softer. Ethan turned to look at me with complicated eyes.
“Fine. The child will still be registered under Olivia’s name. We’ll announce to the public that Vivian gave birth to a
stillborn.”
Leaving those words, he hurried away with Olivia.
Soon after, his mother’s maids swarmed in and tied me up, dragging me to an abandoned storage shed.
I had no strength left. They literally dragged me along the ground.
Fifty lashes landed on my back, one after another. Blood bloomed like red flowers beneath me.
His mother looked down at me from above, shaking her head,
“You come from the Shaw family, one of Seattle’s finest. I clearly misjudged you. You have the temperament of a
doormat. What happened to you is exactly what you deserve.”
I had wanted to fight back, but I never belonged here in the first place.
The system had placed restrictions on me–one of them being that I could not harm Olivia.
The snow outside fell harder and harder, slowly covering the blood.
Gradually, my consciousness faded. I felt like I was losing myself.

When the punishment was over, no one attended to me.
I had to crawl back toward the house on all fours, inch by inch.
A long trail of blood stretched behind me. Every movement felt like my wounds were about to split open.
I knew I wouldn’t die. I only had to wait three more days before I could leave.
I thought I would die on this path. But suddenly, a familiar pair of arms wrapped tightly around me.
Ethan looked at me anxiously, his voice trembling.
“Vivian, don’t scare me. I’m taking you to see a doctor. You’re going to be okay.”
I listened carefully. There were no other thoughts.
This sentence seemed to be sincere.
But I didn’t care anymore..
The doctor carefully stitched my wounds. Ethan stayed by my side nervously.
When I nearly bit my tongue from the pain, he even put his own arm in my mouth.
In everyone’s eyes, Ethan treated me differently.
But I knew. I had always been his second choice.
He could never let go of his childhood sweetheart, Olivia.
The next day was my birthday. He specially had Olivia bring the child to celebrate with me.
He placed the child in my arms and smiled.
“See? I keep my promises. And Olivia is kind–hearted–she came specially to celebrate your birthday.”
I took the child carefully. Just as I reached out to touch his face, he began crying uncontrollably.
The nanny took him for a thorough check and discovered several needles stuck in his back.
Olivia immediately fell to the ground, pointing at me with a pitiful expression.
“He’s your own child. Even if you want revenge on me, how could you come up with such a cruel method?”
I opened my mouth, but before I could say a word, Ethan slapped me to the ground.
Olivia watched as the needles were pulled out one by one, wailing in grief.

“I know you’ve resented me all along, but the child is so young. What wrong did he do?”
I looked at her indifferently as she cried her eyes out and spoke wearily.
“You’re right. What wrong did he do? Then take my life to make it up to him.”
